Bladder cancer (BCa) is a significant health issue and poses a healthcare burden on patients, highlighting the importance of an effective detection method. Here, we developed a urine DNA methylation diagnostic panel for distinguishing between BCa and non-BCa. In the discovery stage, an analysis of the TCGA database was conducted to identify BCa-specific DNA hypermethylation markers.

Thermal ages of the Huatung Basin determined from seismic waveform modeling: insights into Southeast Asia's evolution.

The Huatung Basin (HB), situated on the leading part of the Philippine Sea Plate, is directly involved in oblique subduction and mountain building in the Taiwan region. However, previous studies have reported a wide range of ages for the HB, from 30 to 130 Ma, making it difficult to properly constrain regional tectonics. We analyzed teleseismic waveforms recorded on Taiwan that traveled through the slab associated with the HB.

Mutations in the isocitrate dehydrogenase gene (IDH1) are involved in the progression of tumors. Although IDH1 has a role in various tumors, its clinical relevance and its expression in response to the immune response have not been investigated in prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD). In the present study, we investigated the utility of IDH1 as a prognostic biomarker for PRAD by analyzing IDH1 mRNA expression and its association with patient survival and immune cell infiltration.

Mitochondria are double-membraned organelles that exhibit fluidity. They are the main site of cellular aerobic respiration, providing energy for cell proliferation, migration, and survival; hence, they are called "powerhouses." Mitochondria play an important role in biological processes such as cell death, cell senescence, autophagy, lipid synthesis, calcium homeostasis, and iron balance.

The effectiveness of simulation education program on shared decision-making attitudes among nurses in Taiwan.

Background: Shared decision-making (SDM) is significantly associated with promoting the quality of end-of-life (EOL). The attitude of nurses toward the end of life can affect EOL care, but there are few SDM-related clinical learning programs focused on EOL. In this study, therefore, we evaluated the effectiveness of an EOL-simulation education program on attitudes toward SDM among nurses, using an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).

Development and testing of the shared decision-making attitudes scale among nurses in Taiwan: a cross-sectional scale development study.

Exploring the factors affecting musculoskeletal disorders risk among hospital nurses.

Background: Musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) is currently recognized as one of the most common occupational injuries for which nursing personnel in the medical service industry have been identified as a high-risk group. In this study, we explore the prevalence of MSD in various body parts as well as their risk factors among hospital nurses.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design with stratified cluster sampling was used to collect data from 1,803 nurses.

Inhibiting casein kinase 2 overcomes paclitaxel resistance in gastric cancer.

Purpose: Casein kinase (CK) 2 activation has been implicated in the proliferation of various tumor types and resistance to chemotherapy. We investigated the mechanistic basis for the association between CK2 activation and paclitaxel resistance in a gastric cancer (GC).

Experimental Design: CK2 expression was evaluated in 59 advanced GC patients treated with paclitaxel as the second-line therapy.

Characterization of the hepatitis B virus DNA detected in urine of chronic hepatitis B patients.

Background: Detection of human hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in the urine of patients with chronic hepatitis B infection (CHB) has been reported previously, suggesting urine could provide a potential route of horizontal HBV transmission. However, it is not clear whether the HBV DNA detected in urine is indeed full-length, infectious viral DNA. The aim of this study is to assess the potential infectivity of urine from patients with CHB and to correlate HBV DNA detection in urine with clinical parameters, such as serum viral load and HBeAg status.

Glycyrrhizic acid (GA), the main component of licorice root extracts, has been shown to suppress cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in various types of cancers. However, the molecular mechanism of its anticancer activity remains poorly understood and warrants further investigation. MDA-MB‑231 cells were treated with various concentrations of GA and the cytotoxic effects of GA were determined using the CCK-8 assay.

The prevalence rate of deviations in body constitutions and related factors in follow-up stage breast cancer patients-A nationwide study.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to apply a rigorous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) body constitution questionnaire (BCQ) to survey the prevalence rate of deviations in body constitution and to explore the health-related lifestyle behavior factors of deviations in body constitution.

Design: A cross-sectional study was administered through postal mail. Subjects were recruited from a national organization for breast cancer patients (Taiwan Breast Cancer Alliance).

CX-5461 is a DNA G-quadruplex stabilizer with selective lethality in BRCA1/2 deficient tumours.

G-quadruplex DNAs form four-stranded helical structures and are proposed to play key roles in different cellular processes. Targeting G-quadruplex DNAs for cancer treatment is a very promising prospect. Here, we show that CX-5461 is a G-quadruplex stabilizer, with specific toxicity against BRCA deficiencies in cancer cells and polyclonal patient-derived xenograft models, including tumours resistant to PARP inhibition.

Hydrogen peroxide inducible clone-5 mediates reactive oxygen species signaling for hepatocellular carcinoma progression.

One of the signaling components involved in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression is the focal adhesion adaptor paxillin. Hydrogen peroxide inducible clone-5 (Hic-5), one of the paralogs of paxillin, exhibits many biological functions distinct from paxillin, but may cooperate with paxillin to trigger tumor progression. Screening of Hic-5 in 145 surgical HCCs demonstrated overexpression of Hic-5 correlated well with intra- and extra-hepatic metastasis.

[Reducing the incidence of needlestick injuries due to insulin pen injectors among self-users in the outpatient clinic setting].

Background & Problem: The rising number of people practicing insulin self-injection at home has led to increasing numbers of needlestick injuries due to inadequate self-injection skills among these patients. To reduce needlestick injuries at home, patients should not recap needles and should adopt proper needle disposal practices. A random survey of 80 outpatients currently using insulin pen injectors at home conducted between February and April 2012 found that 70% self-reported suffering needlestick incidents.

Increased yin-deficient symptoms and aggravated autonomic nervous system function in patients with metastatic cancer.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to investigate the differences in severity of yin-deficiency syndrome (YDS) and function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) between patients with cancer with metastasis and those without metastasis.

Setting: The setting was an outpatient clinic in a teaching hospital in central Taiwan.

Subjects: The subjects were a total of 124 patients who had been diagnosed with cancer on the basis of pathologic and clinical findings.
