Trends and Outcomes of Venous Thromboembolism in Hospitalized Patients With Ovarian Cancer: Results From Nationwide Inpatient Sample Database 2003 to 2011.

Objective: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in hospitalized patients with malignancy. Nationwide Inpatient Sample database was analyzed to determine the trends in the rate of hospitalization and mortality from VTE in hospitalized ovarian cancer patients and assess its economic impact and resource utilization.

Method: We queried the 2003 to 2011 Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from Healthcare Cost and Utilization project (Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality) to identify all adults (age ≥18 years) ovarian cancer.

Hypereosinophilic syndrome preceding a diagnosis of B-cell lymphoma.

Introduction: Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a rare condition characterized by eosinophilia and organ destruction secondary to eosinophilic infiltration. The coexistence of primary B-cell lymphoma and hypereosinophilic syndrome is extremely rare. We present a case of HES that preceded the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Severe Hyperthyroidism Complicated by Agranulocytosis Treated with Therapeutic Plasma Exchange: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Aim: To present a case of Graves' disease complicated by methimazole induced agranulocytosis treated with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) and review of the literature.

Case Presentation: A 21-year-old patient with a history of Graves' disease presented to the endocrine clinic. His history was significant for heat intolerance, weight loss, and tremors.

When a wound is the harbinger of a serious underlying systemic illness.

A 55-year-old woman presented with progressive enlarging and painful non-healing ulcers on her bilateral lower extremities; biopsy was consistent with pyoderma gangrenosum. Workup for an underlying illness revealed a cavitary lung nodule and an ulcerating mass in the anal canal. Patient did not have any respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms.

Hospitalists and primary care physicians encounter renal disease daily. Although most cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) are secondary to dehydration and resolve by giving fluids, many cases of AKI are due to not uncommon but unfamiliar causes needing nephrology evaluation. Common indications to consult a nephrologist on an emergency basis include hyperkalemia or volume overload in end stage renal disease patients (ESRD).

A case report of mantle cell lymphoma manifesting as a foot lesion.

Introduction: Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that most commonly affects men above the age of 60 years. The disease is called MCL because the tumor cells originate from the mantle zone of the lymph node. The most commonly affected sites are the lymph nodes, bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, Waldeyer's ring and rarely the skin, breast and central nervous system.

Paraneoplastic syndrome and underlying breast cancer: a worsening rash despite initiation of chemotherapy.

Skin may show the first clinical evidence of systemic disease and can be the first clue to malignancy in 1% of cases. Dermatomyositis is an immunologically mediated inflammatory myopathy characterized by proximal muscle weakness, muscle inflammation, and characteristic skin findings. It has an incidence of 1 in 100,000 patients.

Case report of vancomycin-induced pancytopenia.

Vancomycin is the first-line agent for the treatment of bacteremia, endocarditis, pneumonia, cellulitis, and osteomyelitis. Pancytopenia is an uncommon adverse effect of vancomycin therapy, with only a few cases of vancomycin-related neutropenia and pancytopenia described in the literature. We describe a case of a 56-year-old man who was diagnosed with chronic paraspinal abscess and started on intravenous vancomycin.
