Incorporating person-centered outcomes into clinical trials for neurodegenerative diseases has been challenging due to a deficiency in quantitative measures. Global warming will lead to significantly increased temperatures on earth. Plants respond to high ambient temperature with altered developmental and growth programs, termed thermomorphogenesis. Here we show that thermomorphogenesis is conserved in Arabidopsis, soybean, and rice and that it is linked to a decrease in the levels of the two macronutrients nitrogen and phosphorus.

Here, we report the draft genome sequences of 10 marine bacteria that were isolated, assembled, and annotated by undergraduate students participating in a marine microbial genomics course. Genomic comparisons suggest that 7 of the 10 strains are novel isolates, providing a resource for future marine microbiology investigations.

An augmented intelligence tool to predict short-term mortality risk among patients with cancer could help identify those in need of actionable interventions or palliative care services. An algorithm to predict 30-day mortality risk was developed using socioeconomic and clinical data from patients in a large community hematology/oncology practice. Objective: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is defined in the World Health Organization classification as a tumor mass consisting of myeloblasts with or without maturation and involving any anatomic site other than the bone marrow. We present a case of MS developing in a patient with 5q- myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and review the relevant literature.

Methods: A 77-year-old woman with recent diagnosis of MDS associated with del(5q) presented with symptoms and signs attributable to a mass involving the T8 vertebra.

Background: Patients with heart failure often have concomitant renal disease which can result in uremic platelet dysfunction. Determining whether uremia has affected platelets by platelet aggregometry can be challenging in these patients since they are often on antiplatelet medications. The Medicare appeals backlog has become an intractable problem, troubling not only providers, but also administrative law judges (ALJs) and others within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). In December 2013, the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals (OMHA) suspended assignment of most new requests for ALJ hearings, which means it will take at least 30 months for an ALJ to adjudicate a newly submitted appeal of a Medicare claim denial. The problems inherent in the Medicare appeals system are beyond the control of providers and require action by OMHA and CMS.

Sepsis mortality may be improved by early recognition and appropriate treatment based on evidence-based guidelines. An intervention was developed that focused on earlier identification of sepsis, early antimicrobial administration, and an educational program that was disseminated throughout all hospital units and services. There were 1331 patients with sepsis during the intervention period and 1401 patients with sepsis during the control period.
