Article Synopsis
- Carbon oxidation occurs in two stages: forming surface oxides and then gasifying those oxides into CO gas.
- Calcium carbonate (CaCO) was used as a catalyst in this process, which lowered the oxidation temperature of graphite from 1,059 K to 946 K.
- The use of CaCO not only leads to the formation of CO more easily from graphite but also requires significantly less energy for the oxidation compared to graphite alone (74.3 kJ/mol vs. 148 kJ/mol).
