Background: The quality of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) has been closely related to their growth regions. The geo-herbalism of TCMs is just like the protected destination of origin on foodstuffs and wines, telling us the specific geographic regions could yield TCMs with superior quality. However, the impact of habitat on TCMs could hardly been indicated in current quality evaluation, defects were as follows: (1) few studies involved the effect of environmental factors, (2) more attentions were paid to several abundant compounds, while global components especially water-soluble compounds were prone to be ignored.

The research on distribution and quality suitability division of Desmodium styracifolium were formulated by Maxent and ArcGIS model based on the content of schaftoside and polysaccharide of D. styracifolium and its field research in the south and southwest areas of China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Yunnan), and the most suitable habitats of distribution suitability and quality suitability were screened. The distribution suitability results indicated that average air temperature in April, mean temperature of coldest quarter, soil type, coldness index were found as the four dominant factors contributing to the plant distribution.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study focused on using advanced metabolomics techniques, specifically UHPLC/Q-TOF MS, to differentiate between two plant species: Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis (PPY) and Paris veitnamensis (PV).
  • - Researchers identified a total of 146 metabolites, including 42 potential new compounds, and applied statistical analyses to distinguish between the two species, successfully finding 15 biomarkers for differentiation.
  • - The findings demonstrate that metabolite profiling is a reliable method to identify unique markers that can differentiate traditional Chinese medicine species that may have similar origins.

Atractylodes is an East-Asiatic endemic genera that distributed in China, Japan and Russian Far Eastern. As an important resource of medicinal plant, atractylodes has long been used as herbal medicine. To example the significant features in its trueborn quality and geographical distribution, we explored the relationships between medicine quality and habitat suitability in two classifications-lower atractylodin content than the standard of Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2010) and the other has higher content.

Through study on the correlation between atractylodis lactones ingredient content and climatic factors, we research regionalization from climatic of five main producing provinces of the country, in order to provide a scientific basis for atractylodis' conscious cultivation. By sampling from 40 origins which from five main producing provinces of the country, we use SPSS to analysis variation of atractylodis lactones ingredient content in different conditions of climatic factors and the effect of each factors. Then according to the relationship between atractylodis lactones ingredient content and climatic factors, we use ArcGIS to conduct ecological suitability regionalization based on climatic factors.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on Atractylodes lancea to find the best growing conditions by comparing its growth in various environments, particularly under bamboo and in open fields.
  • Results showed that the plants growing under bamboo had a significantly higher survival rate (76%) and volatile oil content (4.09%) than those in open fields, which had a lower survival rate (30%) and oil content (2.24%).
  • While the yield of plants in the understory (41g) was lower than those in the open field (104.5g), the study suggests that growing A. lancea in forest understories could provide a low-maintenance approach with potential for improved medicinal properties through better soil management.

This paper aims to summarize the achievements during the implementation process of good agricultural practice (GAP) in Chinese Materia Medica (CMM), and on basis of analyzing the existing problems of GAP, to propose further implementation of GAP in TCM growing. Since the launch of GAP in CMM growing ten years ago, it has acquired great achievements, including: (1) The promulgation of a series of measures for the administration of the GAP approval in the CMM growing; (2) The expanded planting area of CMM; (3) The increased awareness of standardized CMM growing among farmers and enterprises; (4) The establishment of GAP implementation bases for CMM growing; (5) The improvement of theory and methodology for CMM growing; (6) The development of a large group of experts and scholars in GAP approval for CMM production. The problems existing in the production include: (1) A deep understanding of GAP and its certification is still needed; (2) The distribution of the certification base is not reasonable; (3) The geo-economics effect and the backward farming practices are thought to be the bottlenecks in the standardization of CMM growing and the scale production of CMM; (4) Low comparative effectiveness limits the development of the GAP; (5) The base of breeding improved variety is blank; (6) The immature of the cultivation technique lead to the risk of production process; (7) The degradation of soil microbial and the continuous cropping obstacle restrict the sustainable development of the GAP base.
