The Hmong are an ethnic hill tribe group originally from Southern China with concentrated populations throughout Southeast Asia, especially the mountains of northern Laos. Today, the Hmong population in the United States is growing rapidly, with a median age of 20.

The Hmong began arriving to the United States as refugees in the mid 1970s and constitute a growing number of the population. Little is known about the prevalence and care of dementia in Hmong elderly individuals.
