Aim: Sarcopenia has been with a decrease in masseter muscle (MM) thickness in high-risk older populations. However, the relationship between sarcopenia and determinants of MM volume (MMV) in the general elderly population remains unclear.

Method: In a cross-sectional study of 1,484 older adults in Tokyo, we evaluated MMV using 3D MRI scanning, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM), handgrip strength, dietary intake, smoking, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels, and the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism.

Background: Metabolic syndrome involves health problems influenced by aging and genetics. The glucokinase regulatory protein () rs1260326 polymorphism (Leu446) is associated with metabolic traits. This study explores the impact of the GCKR rs1260326 polymorphism on metabolic traits in older Japanese with focusing on sex-specific differences.

In forensic medicine, fatal hypothermia diagnosis is not always easy because findings are not specific, especially if traumatized. Post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) is a useful adjunct to the cause-of-death diagnosis and some qualitative image character analysis, such as diffuse hyperaeration with decreased vascularity or pulmonary emphysema, have also been utilized for fatal hypothermia. However, it is challenging for inexperienced forensic pathologists to recognize the subtle differences of fatal hypothermia in PMCT images.

An improved protocol of QTL-seq, an NGS-based method for bulked segregant analysis we previously developed in rice, allowed successful mapping of QTLs of interest in the highly heterozygous genome of B. rapa, demonstrating the power of this elegant method for genetic analyses in heterozygous species of economic importance. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) and the various NGS-based methods developed for rapidly identifying candidate genes of interest have accelerated genetic analysis mainly in the model plants rice and Arabidopsis.

In open-skill sports such as soccer, the environment surrounding players is rapidly changing. Therefore, players are required to process a large amount of external information and take appropriate actions in a very short period. Executive functions (EFs)-the cognitive control processes that regulate thoughts and action-are needed for high performance in soccer.

A new method has been developed for the synthesis of chiral 4-carboxyl oxazolidinones by the catalytic asymmetric aldol reaction of an isocyanatomalonate diester with an aldehyde in the presence of a thiourea catalyst. The resulting chiral 4-carboxyl oxazolidinones are the equivalent of β-hydroxy-α-amino acids bearing a tri- or tetrasubstituted carbon center at their α position. With this in mind, this procedure was successfully applied to the first total synthesis of mycestericin C, which was completed in 12 steps and represents one of the shortest reported sequences for the construction of natural products of this type.

The scope and limitations of the platinum catalyzed 7-endo cyclization of internal alkynyl amides were investigated. Substitution of the alkyne with an aryl group gave better results, presumably because it stabilized the transition state. Applying the reaction to a secondary amide, the caprazamycin core was successfully synthesized from commercially available material in eight steps.

The first enantioselective Neber reaction of β-ketoxime sulfonates catalyzed by a bifunctional thiourea has been developed. The reaction proceeds stereoselectively with 5 mol % of the catalyst to give the 2H-azirine carboxylic esters in good yields with up to 93% ee. In addition, the resulting azirines can be successfully employed in the stereoselective synthesis of di- and trisubstituted aziridines.
