Diffuse interstitial lung diseases (ILD) include conditions with identifiable causes such as chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP), sarcoidosis (SAR), chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (CHP), and connective tissue disease-associated interstitial pneumonia (CTD), as well as idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) of unknown origin. In non-IIP diffuse lung diseases, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid appearance is diagnostic. This study examines lymphocyte subsets in BAL fluid and peripheral blood of 56 patients with diffuse ILD, excluding idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), who underwent BAL for diagnostic purposes.

The design of functional materials with desired properties is essential in driving technological advances in areas such as energy storage, catalysis and carbon capture. Generative models accelerate materials design by directly generating new materials given desired property constraints, but current methods have a low success rate in proposing stable crystals or can satisfy only a limited set of property constraints. Here we present MatterGen, a model that generates stable, diverse inorganic materials across the periodic table and can further be fine-tuned to steer the generation towards a broad range of property constraints.

Article Synopsis
  • Omalizumab is effective in reducing severe asthma symptoms, but not all patients experience the same benefits or can use it long-term.
  • This study analyzed 82 out of 116 patients treated with omalizumab over two years, assessing factors like asthma control, hospital visits, and medication use.
  • The findings indicate that having a certain eosinophil count or specific IgE antibodies can help predict who responds well to treatment, but only the GETE score at two years was associated with continued use of omalizumab beyond that period.

Background: Examining human coding and non-coding RNAs present in skin surface lipids (SSL-RNAs) offers a promising approach to understanding the physiological state of the skin. Benralizumab treatment can reduce exacerbations and improve symptom control and quality of life in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma. Although this treatment effectively depletes peripheral blood eosinophils, the impact of benralizumab on SSL-RNA remains completely unknown.

Steroid-resistant asthma is a common cause of refractory asthma. Type 2 inflammation is the main inflammatory response in asthma, and the mechanism underlying the steroid-resistance of type 2 inflammation has not been completely elucidated. Tumor-necrosis-factor-like apoptosis-inducing factor (TWEAK) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 are involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the production of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and C-C motif chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5).

The analysis of skin surface lipid-RNAs (SSL-RNAs) provides a non-invasive method for understanding the molecular pathology of atopic dermatitis (AD), but its relevance to asthma remains uncertain. Although dupilumab, a biologic drug approved for both asthma and AD, has shown efficacy in improving symptoms for both conditions, its impact on SSL-RNAs is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of dupilumab treatment on SSL-RNA profiles in patients with severe asthma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the oncological outcomes of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNB) and pelvic lymphadenectomy (PLD) in patients with early-stage cervical cancer.
  • A total of 104 patients, with tumor sizes mainly ≤2 cm, underwent laparoscopic or robot-assisted radical hysterectomy, showing that only one patient in the SNB group had lymph node metastasis compared to nine in the PLD group.
  • Follow-up results indicated a 100% disease-free survival (DFS) rate for the SNB group and a 91.5% rate for the PLD group, suggesting that SNB is adequate for patients with smaller tumors, potentially making PLD unnecessary.

: The application of personalized cancer treatment based on genetic information and surgical samples has begun in the field of cancer medicine. However, a biopsy may be painful for patients with advanced diseases that do not qualify for surgical resection. Patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) are cancer models in which patient samples are transplanted into immunodeficient mice.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models retain the characteristics of tumors and are useful tools for personalized therapy and translational research. In this study, we aimed to establish PDX models for uterine corpus malignancies (UC-PDX) and analyze their similarities. Tissue fragments obtained from 92 patients with uterine corpus malignancies were transplanted subcutaneously into immunodeficient mice.

Background: At the time of benign gynecological surgery, a prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy or salpingectomy is increasingly being performed concurrently to reduce the risk of future ovarian and fallopian tube cancer. We herein describe a case of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome in which a hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy were performed with a preoperative diagnosis of benign tumor. A detailed pathological examination revealed occult fallopian tube cancer, and additional staging surgery provided an accurate pathology diagnosis.

  • This study compares lymphatic complications in patients with endometrial cancer who underwent sentinel node biopsy (SNB) versus pelvic lymphadenectomy (LND) from September 2012 to April 2022.
  • Out of 388 patients, those who had SNB experienced significantly lower rates of lower-extremity lymphedema (LEL) at 2.0% compared to 21.3% in the pelvic LND group.
  • Additionally, no patients in the SNB group developed pelvic lymphocele (PL), while 2.1% of the pelvic LND group did, highlighting SNB's lower risk for lymphatic complications overall.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving 36 severe asthma patients showed that after 1 year of benralizumab treatment, there were notable changes in immune cell counts, including a reduction in eosinophils and basophils, alongside an increase in Th2 cells.
  • * The research indicates that circulating Th17 cell frequencies and FeNO levels could serve as predictive markers for patients' responsiveness to benralizumab treatment in a real-world context.

Background: Malignant struma ovarii is a very rare type of gynecologic cancer. Although its most common histological subtype is a pure type of papillary thyroid carcinoma containing two components, papillary carcinoma and poorly differentiated carcinoma, malignant struma ovarii is still extremely rare. As a result, the optimal treatment for this type of tumor remains uncertain due to its rarity.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models are useful tools for preclinical drug evaluation, biomarker identification, and personalized medicine strategies, and can be developed by the heterotopic or orthotopic grafting of surgically resected tumors into immunodeficient mice. We report the PDX models of cervical cancer and demonstrate the similarities among original and different generations of PDX tumors. Fresh tumor tissues collected from 22 patients with primary cervical cancer were engrafted subcutaneously into NOD.

Background: Because patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models resemble the original tumors, they can be used as platforms to find target agents for precision medicine and to study characteristics of tumor biology such as clonal evolution and microenvironment interactions. The aim of this review was to identify articles on endometrial cancer PDXs (EC-PDXs) and verify the methodology and outcomes.

Methods: We used PubMed to research and identify articles on EC-PDX.

Article Synopsis
  • A recent study indicated that minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for cervical cancer might lead to higher recurrence and death rates compared to abdominal radical hysterectomy (ARH).
  • The current research compared outcomes for 182 patients with early-stage cervical cancer who underwent either MIS using vaginal closure or ARH, focusing on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).
  • Results showed minimal differences in recurrence rates (4.5% for MIS vs. 3.5% for ARH) and similar DFS and OS across both groups, suggesting that MIS with vaginal closure does not significantly increase risks for these patients.
