We present a case of a 78-year-old woman who visited our hospital for chronic atrial fibrillation. She consulted an orthopedic surgeon for lumbar pain in August 2009 and has been followed up for osteoporosis. However, her lumbar pain became exacerbated.

Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) is respiratory therapy designed to assist ventilation without endotracheal intubation. It has been reported that NPPV is useful for respiratory failures due to various conditions. Recently, the critical care ventilator has been developed to cover either invasive or noninvasive mechanical ventilation.

Analysis of renal tubular electrolyte transporter genes in seven patients with hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis.

Background: Disorders that manifest hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, such as Bartter's syndrome and Gitelman's syndrome, are caused by the malfunction of renal tubular electrolyte transporters. Bartter's syndrome may be linked to dysfunction of Na-K-2Cl cotransporter (NKCC2), renal outer medullary K channel (ROMK), or Cl channel Kb (ClC-Kb), while Gitelman's syndrome may be linked to Na-Cl cotransporter (NCCT) dysfunction. However, previous genetic analyses in these syndromes have included many heterozygotes for each gene and there has been no further analysis of other genes.
