Article Synopsis
  • Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive type of lymphoma often seen in immunocompromised individuals, and it's linked to genetic mutations in the STAT3 gene.
  • A rare case of PBL was reported where the patient also developed T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia (T-LGLL) and pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) following chemotherapy.
  • This case is significant as it is the first documented occurrence of PBL alongside T-LGLL and PRCA, providing valuable information about the complications and underlying mechanisms of PBL.

Atypical lipomatous tumors (ALTs) are locally aggressive adipocytic malignancies that frequently occur in middle-aged adults. We report the rare case of an ALT of the thigh that occurred in a 4-year-old girl. Since the tumor was initially diagnosed as a lipoblastoma by incisional biopsy, marginal resection was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • High-grade B-cell lymphoma with 11q aberrations (HGBL-11q) has been newly classified as a high-grade mature B-cell neoplasm by the World Health Organization, showing similarities to Burkitt lymphoma but lacking MYC translocation.
  • A study analyzed 113 aggressive B-cell lymphomas, finding that 7.96% had 11q aberrations, with six cases specifically identified as HGBL-11q, predominantly affecting males aged from 8 to 87 years.
  • The clinical implications of HGBL-11q, including its pathogenesis and prognosis, remain uncertain, emphasizing the need for further research and accurate diagnosis through methods like fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Article Synopsis
  • * The case report describes two patients: the first, a 40-year-old male with high FDG uptake and aggressive tumor characteristics, who sadly passed away 2 years after diagnosis.
  • * In contrast, a 65-year-old female with low FDG uptake had a lower-grade tumor that was successfully removed and remained relapse-free two years post-surgery, suggesting FDG uptake could indicate tumor severity and outcomes.

Synovial hemangioma, a rare benign tumor that occurs most frequently in the knee in children and young adults, has four histological subtypes: Venous, arteriovenous, cavernous and capillary hemangiomas. Since the clinical presentation and radiological findings of synovial hemangioma are non-specific, there is frequently a long period between the onset and the diagnosis. The cases of nine patients, pathologically diagnosed with synovial hemangioma and surgically treated, were retrospectively analyzed.

This study proposes a visual sensing system to investigate the self-propelled motions of droplets. In the visual sensing of self-propelled droplets, large field-of-view and high-resolution images are both required to investigate the behaviors of multiple droplets as well as chemical reactions in the droplets. Therefore, we developed a view-expansive microscope system using a color camera head to investigate these chemical reactions; in the system, we implemented an image processing algorithm to detect the behaviors of droplets over a large field of view.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in the tumor microenvironment are crucial for the progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and this study focuses on specific CAF-related molecules: versican, periostin, and lumican.
  • A total of 106 ESCC patients who had surgery without prior chemotherapy or radiotherapy were analyzed for the expression of these proteins in cancer stroma, using techniques like immunohistochemistry and various survival analysis methods.
  • The findings indicated that higher levels of versican, periostin, and lumican in the cancer stroma correlated with worse relapse-free survival and overall survival, suggesting that versican and lumican could serve as important prognostic biomarkers for patients post-s

Gastric adenocarcinoma with enteroblastic differentiation (GAED) is rare, highly malignant, and has higher vascular invasion and metastasis rates than conventional differentiated gastric cancer (CDGC). We report two cases of GAED that underwent curative resection by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Case 1 was an 82-year-old man with an elevated lesion in the gastric cardia.

Background: This retrospective study aimed to compare the discriminative performance between magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and biological markers in detecting liver fibrosis and in predicting postoperative ascites (PA).

Methods: We enrolled 77 patients consecutively who underwent hepatectomy between March 2017 and June 2019. Liver fibrosis was histopathologically graded using the METAVIR scoring system as reference.

Rationale: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in children. The prognosis of osteosarcoma has improved with the use of aggressive systemic chemotherapy in addition to surgery. The relapse of osteosarcomas is usually as lung metastasis observed within 2 to 3 years after the initial treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • A 78-year-old man with a pancreatic tumor blocking the main pancreatic duct was sent to the hospital for further evaluation.
  • An endoscopic biopsy confirmed it was a neuroendocrine tumor (NET) G3, which led to the patient having a total pancreatectomy.
  • This case is notable as it's the first documented instance of a NET filling the main pancreatic duct, diagnosed through a preoperative endoscopic biopsy.

Long-term survival rates for pediatric patients with cancer have significantly improved, but novel approaches are desired for those with refractory/relapsed solid tumors. Recently, programed cell death-1/programed cell death-ligand-1 blockade has emerged as an effective option for many intractable cancers. However, not all patients show objective response to such therapy.
