Background: A concentration of specimen is recommended for the effective recovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), but the bacteriological efficiency is not well evaluated. The present study evaluated the factors contributing to concentration efficiency of centrifugation and bead-based technique (TB-Beads; Microsens, UK) to recover MTB by using simple in vitro specimens.

Methods: Four specimens were prepared (6.

Dengue fever (DF), one of the most important emerging arboviral diseases, is transmitted through the bite of container breeding mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. A household entomological survey was conducted in Dhaka from August through October 2000 to inspect water-holding containers in indoor, outdoor, and rooftop locations for Aedes larvae. The objective of this study was to determine mosquito productivity of each container type and to identify some risk factors of households infested with Aedes larvae.

Purpose: To investigate factors contributing to the drastic increase and subsequent decrease in latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) notifications in 2011 (n = 10,046) and 2012 (n = 8,771), respectively, in Japan.

Methods: We conducted cross-sectional surveys in all 495 health centers in Japan in 2012 and 2013 using a semi-structured questionnaire that contained questions regarding the number of contacts listed for contact investigation, interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) results, and incident of possible false positive IGRA results.

Results: Both the numbers and proportion of patients investigated using IGRA tended to increase from 2009 to 2012.

Background: Although sepsis is often associated with high mortality in severely malnourished children, data are very limited on appropriate diagnostic tools to predict mortality. We examined the role of urinary liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) in children <5 years old with sepsis who died.

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at the Dhaka Hospital of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh.

Background.  The Xpert Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)/rifampicin (RIF) is a fully automated diagnostic test that allows for the detection of MTB including its RIF resistance. Although the test is used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in sputum samples worldwide, studies using fecal specimens are scarce.

Purpose: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients has not been investigated in the Philippines. This study aimed to describe HRQOL among PTB patients and to determine factors that are associated with HRQOL.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at 10 public health centers and 2 non-government organization clinics in District I, Tondo, Manila.

Phosphorus is an essential substance in our body, and hypophosphataemia (HP) is well-described in rickets, refeeding syndrome, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and in chronic alcohol-abuse. However, to our knowledge, HP among severely-malnourished children has not been studied in detail, and information on prevalence, severity, and treatment is scarce. Currently, there are only a few published case reports of HP.

Background: The interaction between hypophosphatemia (HP) and severe malnutrition has received little attention. This study investigated the prevalence, severity, and risk factors of HP among severely malnourished children with sepsis in Bangladesh.

Methods: Children aged 6-59 months admitted with sepsis to Dhaka Hospital from April 2010 to December 2011 were enrolled in the study and divided into two groups: severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and non-SAM groups.
