Aims: Relationship between baseline eGFR and the rate of decline in eGFR was investigated in diabetic kidney disease.
Materials And Methods: Patients with type 2 diabetes with microalbuminuria (MI) ( = 124) or macroalbuminuria (MA) ( = 81) received team-based medical care to prevent the development of diabetic kidney disease. The decline in eGFR over 4 years, divided into the first year and subsequent 3 years, was estimated by linear-mixed modeling.
Aims/introduction: The usefulness of markers of carotid plaque, such as sum (PS) and maximum (P-max) of the plaque thickness, in combination with intima-media thickness in the common carotid artery (CIMT) for the detection of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) was investigated in patients with type 2 diabetes without known CAD.
Materials And Methods: B-mode ultrasonographic scanning of the carotid artery and multislice computed tomography coronary angiography were carried out in 332 asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes.
Results: For the presence of obstructive CAD when incorporating PS or P-max to standard risk factors in a multiple logistic regression model, the classification ability in PS and P-max increased greatly (area under the curve [AUC] 0.
The present study was performed to evaluate pregnancy outcomes in women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in Japan. This multi-institutional retrospective study was conducted in 40 general hospitals in Japan during 2003-2009. We evaluated 369 and 579 pregnant women with type 1 and type 2 DM, respectively, and compared pregnancy outcomes between the two groups.

A multi-institutional retrospective study was performed. We examined pregnant women who met the former criteria for gestational diabetes in Japan, receiving dietary intervention with self-monitoring of blood glucose with or without insulin therapy.

Methods: B mode ultrasonographic scanning of the carotid artery and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) coronary angiography were performed in 227 diabetic patients without known cardiac disease.
Results: The PS was useful to predict the presence of diseased [nonobstructive and obstructive] CAD (≧3 segments) and obstructive (≧50%) CAD with cut-off value of 3.

The mechanism of diabetic embryopathy was investigated using in vitro experiments in a rat embryo culture system and in streptozotocin-induced diabetic pregnant rats. The energy metabolism in embryos during early organogenesis was characterized by a high rate of glucose utilization and lactic acid production (anaerobic glycolysis). Embryos uninterruptedly underwent glycolysis.

It has been reported that diabetes-induced inappropriate apoptosis in embryos during neurulation may be one of the mechanisms leading to neural tube defects. We studied apoptosis and the apoptotic pathway occurring in early post-implantation period embryos of non-diabetic and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In quantitative RT-PCR, bax mRNA was constantly expressed to similar degree in embryos of non-diabetic and diabetic rats, while the expression of bcl-2 mRNA was significantly decreased in diabetic rat embryos compared to non-diabetic rat embryos.

The primary metabolic defect leading to type 2 diabetes mellitus has been thought to be varied among populations, especially in Japanese and Caucasians. Here, we have done the genome-wide scan for type 2 diabetes mellitus using 102 affected Japanese sib-pairs to identify the genetic factors predisposing to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
