Coordination compounds of polydentate nitro-gen ligands with metals are used extensively in research areas such as catalysis, and as models of complex active sites of enzymes in bioinorganic chemistry. Tris(2-pyridyl-meth-yl)amine (TPA) is a tripodal tetra-dentate ligand that is known to form coordination compounds with metals, including copper, iron and zinc. The related compound, tris-[(6-bromo-pyridin-2-yl)meth-yl]amine (TPABr), CHBrN, which possesses a bromine atom on the 6-position of each of the three pyridyl moieties, is also known but has not been heavily investigated.

Metal complexes of 3,5-diiso-propyl-salicylate are reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-convulsant activities. The title binuclear copper complex, [Cu(CHO)(CHOS)] or [Cu(II)(3,5-DIPS)(DMSO)], contains two five-coordinate copper atoms that are bridged by four 3,5-diiso-propyl-salicylate ligands and capped by two axial dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) moieties. Each copper atom is attached to four oxygen atoms in an almost square-planar fashion, with the addition of a DMSO ligand in an apical position leading to a square-pyramidal arrangement.

The zinc hydride compound, [Tptm]ZnH, may achieve the reduction of CO by (RO)SiH (R = Me, Et) to the methanol oxidation level, (MeO)Si(OR), the formate species, HCOSi(OR). However, because insertion of CO into the Zn-H bond is more facile than insertion of HCOSi(OR), conversion of HCOSi(OR) to the methanol level only occurs to a significant extent in the absence of CO.

The reactions of bis(2-pyridylthio)methane with MeZn and Zn[N(SiMe)] afford [Bptm]ZnMe and [Bptm]ZnN(SiMe), thereby providing access to a variety of other [Bptm]ZnX derivatives, including the zinc hydride complex [Bptm]ZnH, which serves as a catalyst for the reduction of CO and other carbonyl compounds hydrosilylation and hydroboration.

An alternative description is provided for the previously reported novel tetranuclear cadmium carbonyl compound, [Cd(CO)(CHCl)]. Specifically, consideration of single crystal X-ray diffraction data indicates that the compound is better formulated as the rhenium compound, [Re(CO)(CNHS)]. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations predict that, if it were to exist, [Cd(CO)(CHCl)] would have a very different structure to that reported.

A luminescent bimetallic Au complex comprised of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and carbazole (Cz) ligands, that is, (NHC')Au(NHC)AuCz has been synthesized and studied. Both carbene ligands in the bimetallic complex act as electron acceptors in tandem to increase the energy separation between the ground and excited state, which is higher than those found in either monometallic analogue, (NHC)AuCz and (NHC')AuCz. A coplanar geometry designed into the tandem complex ensures sufficient electronic coupling between the π-orbitals of the ligands to impart a strong oscillator strength to the singlet intra-ligand charge-transfer ( ICT) transition.

The title tetra-nuclear copper complex, [CuClO(CHNO)] or [CuClO-(MET)] [MET is 1-(2-hy-droxy-eth-yl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-1-imidazole or metronidazole], contains a tetra-hedral arrangement of copper(II) ions. Each copper atom is also linked to the other three copper atoms in the tetra-hedron bridging chloride ions. A fifth coordination position on each metal atom is occupied by a nitro-gen atom of the monodentate MET ligand.

The reactions of 1-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2-benzimidazole-2-selone, H(sebenzim), towards the zinc and cadmium halides, MX (M = Zn, Cd; X = Cl, Br, I), afford the adducts, [H(sebenzim)]MX, which have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The halide ligands of each of these complexes participate in hydrogen bonding interactions with the imidazole N-H moieties, although the nature of the interactions depends on the halide. Specifically, the chloride and bromide derivatives, [H(sebenzim)]ZnX and [H(sebenzim)]CdX (X = Cl, Br), exhibit two intramolecular N-H•••X interactions, whereas the iodide derivatives, [H(sebenzim)]ZnI and [H(sebenzim)]CdI, exhibit only one intramolecular N-H•••I interaction.

The carbodiphosphorane, (Ph3P)2C, reacts with Me3Al and Me3Ga to afford the adducts, [(Ph3P)2C]AlMe3 and [(Ph3P)2C]GaMe3, which have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. (Ph3P)2C also reacts with Me2Zn and Me2Cd to generate an adduct but the formation is reversible on the NMR time scale. At elevated temperatures, however, elimination of methane and cyclometalation occurs to afford [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]ZnMe and [κ2-Ph3PC{PPh2(C6H4)}]CdMe.

CO reduces nickel(2+) cyanides in basic solution to form tetrahedral Ni(0)(CN)(CO)3(-) or Ni(0)(CN)2(CO)2(2-). Both nickel(0) complexes can be oxidized back to nickel(2+) cyanide/hydroxide so that they behave as CO oxidation catalysts in basic solution. A primitive fuel cell was constructed to demonstrate the feasibility of a CO-powered fuel cell.

CD8+ lymphocyte phenotypes were characterized during acute Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, and a comparison was made to previous studies of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This was of interest because CD8+ cells contribute to immunologic control of both infections, but the usual outcome of EBV infection is benign, whereas untreated HIV infection is fatal. During acute EBV infection, CD8+ cells expressed elevated levels of the activation antigens CD38 and HLA-DR, similar to that during chronic HIV infection.

Since live rubeola vaccine became available in 1963, routine immunization of children at age 15 months has been the recommended strategy for eliminating measles in the United States. However, due to increasing measles outbreaks, especially among previously immunized populations, the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee (ACIP) recently recommended modifying the one-dose measles vaccination policy to a two-dose schedule, one at 15 months and one at age 5 or 6 years. To address the present college population, ACIP recommended vaccinating all college students who lack proof of immunity.

In many parts of the world, tuberculosis (TB) is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Because of the high rate of worldwide TB infection, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), requires nonimmigrant foreign students to have a tuberculin skin test before completing registration for classes. Out of 589 students tested, 57.

Four hundred and fifty childbearing-aged women were screened for rubella hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody after a clinical history of susceptibility was obtained. One hundred and forty-nine (33%) were found to be susceptible (titers less than 1:8), pointing out the need for a move active immunization program for susceptible young women and for routine vaccination of children. Clinical history correlated poorly with the level of HI antibody.
