Article Synopsis
  • - This study assessed the effectiveness of combining neoadjuvant PD-1 inhibitors with chemotherapy in treating locally advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers, comparing it with chemotherapy combined with EGFR inhibitors and chemotherapy alone.
  • - A total of 113 patients were analyzed, revealing that the immunochemotherapy group had higher rates of objective response (88.2%), downstaging (79.41%), and organ preservation (97.1%) compared to the other treatment regimens.
  • - Although the immunochemotherapy treatment improved certain response rates and helped preserve laryngeal function, it did not lead to significantly better overall survival rates at 1 and 2 years compared to the other treatments, indicating the

Sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) is an aggressive cancer affecting the nasal and sinus regions, with its progression factors, particularly genetic ones, not yet fully understood. Here, we first conducted a retrospective study with 219 SNSCC patients to identify clinical factors affecting SNSCC prognosis. Additionally, we mined a vast literature dataset to uncover genetic factors associated with SNSCC progression.

This study investigates the role of M2-exo-mediated HOXC13-AS in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) by examining its transmission to tumor microenvironment (TME) macrophages. Exosomes from M2 macrophages were isolated and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracer analysis and western blot. Expression of HOXC13-AS, miR-485-5p, IGF2BP2, and PD-L1 was analyzed.

The use of multifunctional nanomedicines in the treatment of tumors is gaining popularity. Here, we constructed a nanodrug delivery system (HA/Au-PDA@CZT) that targets tumors and responds to pH and near-infrared (NIR) dual stimuli. By precisely interacting with an overexpressed CD44 receptor in specific cancer cells, hyaluronic acid (HA) is coated on the Au-PDA NP surface for tumor-targeting abilities.

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is involved in the progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The molecular mechanism of lncRNA SOX2-OT in HNSCC remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the oncogenic role of SOX2-OT in HNSCC.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines high-grade transformation (HGT) in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), revealing its aggressive behavior and the serious clinical consequences for patients.
  • Researchers compared 23 HGT patients to non-HGT patients, finding HGT primarily in sinonasal and lacrimal glands, with a worrying increase in lymph node metastasis, perineural invasion, and tumor growth.
  • The findings indicate that patients with HGT face higher rates of recurrence and distant metastasis, suggesting they should be classified as Grade 4 due to their significantly worse survival rates compared to non-HGT cases.

Objectives: To explore the feasibility of making a submental perforator flap distal to the connecting line between the mastoid and the sternoclavicular joint under the guidance of neck-enhanced CT and repairing the postoperative defect of upper airway malignancy.

Materials And Methods: This study retrospectively analysed 19 cases of upper airway malignant tumours treated in our department from January 2021 to September 2022, including 17 males and 2 females, aged 43-70 years.

Site Of Lesions: 15 cases were in the laryngopharynx, 2 cases in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus and 2 cases on the soft palate.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the effectiveness of chemotherapy-based organ-preservation versus immediate total laryngectomy in patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Out of 461 patients analyzed, no significant differences were found in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between the two treatment methods.
  • The organ-preservation approach was successful in retaining larynx function for over 70% of the patients who survived.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma are one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. Although a variety of treatment methods such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy are widely used in diagnosing and treating HNSCC, the survival prognosis of patients has not been significantly improved in the past decades. As an emerging treatment approach, immunotherapy has shown exciting therapeutic effects in R/M HNSCC.

Background: Both free posterior tibial flap (FPTF) and free radial forearm flap (FRFF) are commonly used for head and neck defects. They have many similarities in embryology, histology, and anatomy, but their advantages and disadvantages in head and neck repair have not been fully recognized. This study aimed to compare the cadaveric anatomy and clinical application of FPTF and FRFF for the reconstruction of head and neck defects after tumor resection.

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and identify risk factors for postoperative recurrence of PTC with recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) involvement.

Methods: In total, 171 patients (112 women and 59 men, age: 18-80 years, and 65 patients aged ≥ 55) with T4a PTC with RLN involvement, treated at Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, from January 2006 to December 2020, were retrospectively examined. Clinicopathological characteristics, including voice analysis results, and survival outcomes were assessed.

Objective: To investigate the feasibility and effect of a pedicled submental flap in postoperative defect repair of nasopharyngeal malignant tumors.

Methods: Eight cases (six women, two men; age, 29-63 years) of postoperative defects after resection of malignant nasopharyngeal tumors with a lesion stage of (r) TNM were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative enhanced thin-slice computed tomography of the neck was performed to predict the submental flap reflux vein.

Purpose: the purpose of this study was to screen peripheral blood parameters and construct models predicting the prognosis and induction chemotherapy (IC) response in locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) patients.

Methods: A total of 128 stage III/IVa LSCC patients (who required a total laryngectomy) were enrolled in a retrospective study from January 2013 to September 2020 at Beijing Tongren Hospital of Capital Medical University. Among them, 62 patients received IC (IC group), and 66 patients immediately underwent a total laryngectomy (TL) after diagnosis (surgery group).

Determination of human papillomavirus (HPV) status has become clinically relevant for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. p16 immunohistochemistry is one of the recommended methods for classifying HPV status. However, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and related competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks linked to different p16-status HNSCC are still absent.

Introduction: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is a specific subgroup of papillary thyroid carcinoma and defined with the dimension ≤1 cm by the WHO. Although it shows a relatively high 10-year livability, the metastasis of PTMC into other tissues and organs seriously affects the daily life of patients with relatively high mortality. Therefore, the genetic basis for the metastasis of PTMC needs to be explored for effective therapeutic targets.

Background: The incidence of local recurrence after transoral CO laser microsurgery for T1b-T2 glottic carcinoma is relatively low. Multiple risk factors have been described for the development of local recurrence after treatment. However, to date, there is no analysis or systematic review investigating the relationships between clinical and histopathological factors and the appearance of local recurrence after transoral CO laser microsurgery in T1b-T2 glottic carcinoma patients.
