Purpose: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the branching patterns and vascular fragmentation features in preclinical and early diabetic retinopathy (DR) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).

Methods: OCTA metrics, including branch node number (BNN), branch node density (BND), end point number (EPN), end point density (EPD), fragmented vessel segment count (FVSC), and fragmented vascular length ratio (FVLR), were measured in foveal and parafoveal regions within superficial and deep vascular plexus (SVP and DVP) in the retina.

Results: Compared to healthy control (HCs), both BNN and BND exhibited a significant decrease in individuals with mild DR across both retinal layers, and also in diabetes mellitus without DR (no DR) within DVP.

Background: Benzo(a)pyrene (B[a]P) is the most widely concerned polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which metabolizes benzo(a)pyrene-7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide (BPDE) in vivo to produce carcinogenic effect on the body. Currently, there is limited research on the role of the variation of metabolic enzymes in this process.

Methods: We carried out a study including 752 participants, measured the concentrations of 16 kinds PAHs in both particle and gaseous phases, urinary PAHs metabolites, leukocyte BPDE-DNA adduct and serum BPDE- Albumin (BPDE-Alb) adduct, and calculated daily intake dose (DID) to assess the cumulative exposure of PAHs.

Urinary benzene metabolites trans, trans-muconic acid (-MA), and S-phenyl mercapturic acid (S-PMA) are often used as biomarkers of internal exposure to benzene. However, there are few reports on using urinary benzene metabolites to estimate airborne benzene concentrations in individuals exposed to benzene. In this study, -MA, and S-PMA were analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS, and a simple pharmacokinetic model was used to calculate the daily intake (DI) of benzene based on the levels of urinary -MA, and S-PMA in occupational individuals.

Extensive use of gallium arsenide (GaAs) has led to increased exposure to humans working in the semiconductor industry. This study employed physicochemical characterization of GaAs obtained from a workplace, cytotoxicity analysis of damage induced by GaAs in 16HBE cells, RNA-seq and related bioinformatic analysis, qRT-PCR verification and survival analysis to comprehensively understand the potential mechanism leading to lung toxicity induced by GaAs. We found that GaAs-induced abnormal gene expression was mainly related to the cellular response to chemical stimuli, the regulation of signalling, cell differentiation and the cell cycle, which are involved in transcriptional misregulation in cancer, the MAPK signalling pathway, the TGF-β signalling pathway and pulmonary disease-related pathways.
