The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide, but there is no specific treatment available. Therefore, understanding and controlling the risk factors for CKD are essential for preventing disease occurrence. Salt intake raises blood pressure by increasing fluid volume and contributes to the deterioration of kidney function by enhancing the renin-angiotensin system and sympathetic tone.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), has a significant genetic component and is increasingly prevalent due to environmental factors. Current polygenic risk scores (PRS) have limited predictive power and cannot inform time of symptom onset. Circulating proteomics profiling offers a novel, non-invasive approach for understanding the inflammatory state of complex diseases, enabling the creation of proteomic risk scores (ProRS).

Background: People living with HIV (PLHIV) may have concurrent Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection, and certain antiretroviral therapies are recommended for HBV-HIV co-infected individuals. Routine screening for Hepatitis B virus may influence management of antiretroviral therapy for PLHIV, but risk factors for co-infection have not been well defined. The objective of this study was to identify risk factors for HBV infection among PLHIV in South Africa.

Importance: Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for coronary artery disease (CAD) are a growing clinical and commercial reality. Whether existing scores provide similar individual-level assessments of disease liability is a critical consideration for clinical implementation that remains uncharacterized.

Objective: Characterize the reliability of CAD PRSs that perform equivalently at the population level at predicting individual-level risk.

Neurodegenerative processes are increasingly recognized as potential causative factors in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. While many studies have leveraged mediation analysis models to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking genetic variants to AD diagnostic outcomes, the majority have predominantly focused on regional brain measure as a mediator, thereby compromising the granularity of the imaging data. In our investigation, using the imaging genetics data from a landmark AD cohort, we contrasted both region-based and voxel-based brain measurements as imaging endophenotypes, and examined their roles in mediating genetic effects on AD outcomes.

Soybean is a rainfed crop grown across a wide range of environments in India. Its grain yield is a complex trait governed by many minor genes and influenced by environmental effects and genotype × environment interactions. In the current investigation, grain yield data of different sets of 41, 30 and 48 soybean genotypes evaluated during 2019, 2020 and 2021, respectively across 19 locations and twenty years' data on 19 different climatic parameters at these locations was used to study the environmental effects on grain yield, to understand the genotype × environment interactions and to identify the mega-environments.

Background: Cardiometabolic disorders pose significant health risks globally. Metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of potentially reversible metabolic abnormalities, is a known risk factor for these disorders. Early detection and intervention for individuals with metabolic abnormalities can help mitigate the risk of developing more serious cardiometabolic conditions.

Background: Previous studies have shown that lifestyle/environmental factors could accelerate the development of age-related hearing loss (ARHL). However, there has not yet been a study investigating the joint association among genetics, lifestyle/environmental factors, and adherence to healthy lifestyle for risk of ARHL. We aimed to assess the association between ARHL genetic variants, lifestyle/environmental factors, and adherence to healthy lifestyle as pertains to risk of ARHL.

Background: Numerous observational studies have highlighted associations of genetic predisposition of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) with diverse risk factors, but these findings are constrained by design limitations of observational studies. In this study, we utilized a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) approach, incorporating a polygenic risk score (PRS) derived from a wide array of genomic variants, to systematically investigate phenotypes associated with genetic predisposition to HNSCC. Furthermore, we validated our findings across heterogeneous cohorts, enhancing the robustness and generalizability of our results.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of several arthropod-borne diseases, which remain a priority for epidemiological research. Mosquito vector control strategies have traditionally relied on chemical insecticides such as synthetic pyrethroids. However, the indiscriminate use of pesticides has resulted in the development of resistance in many mosquito species.
