We consider a model of extracellular signal-regulated kinase regulation by dual-site phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, which exhibits bistability and oscillations, but loses these properties in the limit in which the mechanisms underlying phosphorylation and dephosphorylation become processive. Our results suggest that anywhere along the way to becoming processive, the model remains bistable and oscillatory. More precisely, in simplified versions of the model, precursors to bistability and oscillations (specifically, multistationarity and Hopf bifurcations, respectively) exist at all "processivity levels".

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) formed Task Group 178 (TG-178) to perform the following tasks: review in-phantom and in-air calibration protocols for gamma stereotactic radiosurgery (GSR), suggest a dose rate calibration protocol that can be successfully utilized with all gamma stereotactic radiosurgery (GSR) devices, and update quality assurance (QA) protocols in TG-42 (AAPM Report 54, 1995) for static GSR devices. The TG-178 report recommends a GSR dose rate calibration formalism and provides tabulated data to implement it for ionization chambers commonly used in GSR dosimetry. The report also describes routine mechanical, dosimetric, and safety checks for GSR devices, and provides treatment process quality assurance recommendations.

Detection of brain metastases is a paramount task in cancer management due both to the number of high-risk patients and the difficulty of achieving consistent detection. Many dynamical systems arising in biology and other areas exhibit multistationarity (two or more positive steady states with the same conserved quantities). Although deciding multistationarity for a polynomial dynamical system is an effective question in real algebraic geometry, it is in general difficult to determine whether a given network can give rise to a multistationary system, and if so, to identify witnesses to multistationarity, that is, specific parameter values for which the system exhibits multiple steady states. Posttranslational modification of proteins is important for signal transduction, and hence significant effort has gone toward understanding how posttranslational modification networks process information. In this study, an improved scattered photon extraction (SPE) package structure with a reflection plate over the remote phosphor layer is presented. The important factors for the remote phosphor layer in the conventional and improved SPE package structures, including the phosphor layer thickness and phosphor concentration, are also studied. The simulation results show that the yellow-blue ratio (YBR) of the conventional and improved SPE package structure increases with the phosphor concentration when the phosphor layer is thin and that the YBR is saturated when the layer is thick.

Aims/introduction: The present study applied the Wilson-Cleary model of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) by using the structural equation modeling (SEM) approach to understand the interrelationships among clinical, sociodemographic and psychological characteristics in older people with diabetes.

Materials And Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 452 Chinese older people with diabetes recruited from three primary care clinics. A series of assessments were made, including four instruments: the Chinese version of the Short Form 36 Health Survey, Older American Resources and Services Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire, Rand Mental Health Inventory and Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey; and clinical outcomes (diabetes-related characteristics and physiological data).

Lymphatic fluid is a plasma filtrate that can be viewed as having biological activity through the passive accumulation of molecules from the interstitial fluid. The possibility that lymphatic fluid is part of an active self-contained signaling process that parallels the endocrine system, through the activation of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR), has remained unexplored. We show that the GPCR lysophosphatidic acid 5 (LPA5) is found in sensory nerve fibers expressing calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) that innervate the lumen of lymphatic lacteals and enteric nerves.
