Organic matter (OM) composition changed due to land use ─ land cover (LULC) and hydrology modification, has distinctive linkage towards sustainable environment management in tropical river systems. It is crucial in small river systems, which experience delay of freshwater flow to the estuaries due to headwater damming, also LULC alteration along the entire basin. The bacterial bioluminescence assay is one of the novel means for toxicity detection. The bioluminescence response of 2 marine bioluminescent bacteria was tested upon their long-term exposure to 9 different reverse osmosis (RO) rejects with varying chemical composition sampled from various dye industries. Aprataxin polynucleotide kinase/phosphatase-like factor (APLF) facilitates nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) and associates with the core NHEJ components XRCC4-DNA ligase IV and Ku. The APLF forkhead-associated (FHA) domain directs interactions with XRCC4, but the APLF-Ku interaction has not been well characterized. APLF is a forkhead associated-containing protein with poly(ADP-ribose)-binding zinc finger (PBZ) domains, which undergoes ionizing radiation (IR)-induced and Ataxia-Telangiectasia Mutated (ATM)-dependent phosphorylation at serine-116 (Ser(116)). Here, we demonstrate that the phosphorylation of APLF at Ser(116) in human U2OS cells by ATM is dependent on poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 3 (PARP3) levels and the APLF PBZ domains. The interaction of APLF at sites of DNA damage was diminished by the single substitution of APLF Ser(116) to alanine, and the cellular depletion or chemical inhibition of ATM or PARP3 also altered the level of accumulation of APLF at sites of laser-induced DNA damage and impaired the accumulation of Ser(116)-phosphorylated APLF at IR-induced γH2AX foci in human cells.

To evaluate the significant sources contributing to water quality parameters, we used principal component analysis (PCA) for the interpretation of a large complex data matrix obtained from the Kandla creek environmental monitoring program. The data set consists of analytical results of a seasonal sampling survey conducted over 2 years at four stations. PCA indicates five principal components to be responsible for the data structure and explains 76% of the total variance of the data set.

Water quality parameters (temperature, pH, salinity, DO, BOD, suspended solids, nutrients, PHc, phenols, trace metals--Pb, Cd and Hg, chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and phaeopigments) and the sediment quality parameters (total phosphorous, total nitrogen, organic carbon and trace metals) were analysed from samples collected at 15 stations along 3 transects off Karnataka coast (Mangalore harbour in the south to Suratkal in the north), west coast of India during 2007. The analyses showed high ammonia off Suratkal, high nitrite (NO(2)-N) and nitrate (NO(3)-N) in the nearshore waters off Kulai and high nitrite (NO(2)-N) and ammonia (NH(3)-N) in the harbour area. Similarly, high petroleum hydrocarbon (PHc) values were observed near the harbour, while phenols remained high in the nearshore waters of Kulai and Suratkal.

The behaviors of chlorine isotopes in relation to air-sea flux variables have been investigated through multivariate statistical analyses (MSA). The MSA technique provides an approach to reduce the data set and was applied to a set of 7 air-sea flux variables to supplement and describe the variation in chlorine isotopic compositions (delta37Cl) of ocean water.
