Association Between Work-Related Hyperthermia Emergency Department Visits and Ambient Heat in Five Southeastern States, 2010-2012-A Case-Crossover Study.

The objective of this study is to assess ambient temperatures' and extreme heat events' contribution to work-related emergency department (ED) visits for hyperthermia in the southeastern United States to inform prevention. Through a collaborative network and established data framework, work-related ED hyperthermia visits in five participating southeastern U.S.

Advancing the framework for considering the effects of climate change on worker safety and health.

In 2009, a preliminary framework for how climate change could affect worker safety and health was described. That framework was based on a literature search from 1988-2008 that supported seven categories of climate-related occupational hazards: (1) increased ambient temperature; (2) air pollution; (3) ultraviolet radiation exposure; (4) extreme weather; (5) vector-borne diseases and expanded habitats; (6) industrial transitions and emerging industries; and (7) changes in the built environment. This article reviews the published literature from 2008-2014 in each of the seven categories.

Fatal Work-Related Injuries: Southeastern United States, 2008-2011.

In 2008, the work-related injury fatality rate was 3.8 per 100,000 workers in the United States but was 5.2 per 100,000 workers for the southeast region.

Short communication: the effect of temperature on performance of milk ketone test strips.

Ketosis is estimated to affect 15% of early lactation dairy cows. A ketone test strip (Keto-Test; Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN) allows producers a method to determine the concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in milk to track individual animal and herd incidence of ketosis. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of altering the temperature of milk and the test strips at the time of the test on the reliability of the Keto-Test.

Characterization of lead in US workplaces using data from OSHA's integrated management information system.

Background: Lead hazards continue to be encountered in the workplace. OSHA's Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) is the largest available database containing sampling results in US workplaces.

Methods: Personal airborne lead sampling results in IMIS were extracted for years 1979-2008.

Advances and current themes in occupational health and environmental public health surveillance.

The essential purpose of public health surveillance is to monitor important health outcomes and risk factors and provide actionable information to practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and the public to prevent or ameliorate exposure, disease, and death. Although separate 1970s-era acts of Congress made possible the creation of modern occupational health and environmental public health surveillance, these acts also led to fragmented responsibilities and unconnected data across federal agencies. Having a well-defined purpose for systematically collecting relevant data is key, and state and local programs play a crucial role in conducting meaningful surveillance and connecting it with evidence-based outreach and interventions.

Association of self-reported leisure-time physical inactivity with particulate matter 2.5 air pollution.

This study examines the association between annual levels of particulate matter (PM) and self-reported leisure-time physical inactivity (LTPI) in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) among 63,290 survey respondents who participated in the 2001 BRFSS from 142 counties in the U.S. The average prevalence of self-reported LTPI was about 24.

The importance of the prejowl notch in face lifting: the prejowl implant.

This article reviews the anatomy of the lower face in light of approach and techniques for prejowl implant. Implant sizing, patient selection and analysis, technique, and complications are presented. The author cites the manner of aging in the lower face and discusses the concept of augmenting the mandible to re-establish a youthful contour by correcting the prejowl sulcus and chin for rejuvenation.

Objective: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is one of the most common health threats to the adult population of the U.S. and other countries.

Investigation of a cluster of multiple sclerosis in two elementary school cohorts.

The authors investigated a cluster of multiple sclerosis (MS) among people who had attended two elementary schools in El Paso, Texas, from 1948 through 1970. The community was concerned about the possibility of childhood exposure to heavy metals from a large nearby smelter because historical environmental and biological sampling data demonstrated the potential for study cohort members to have been exposed to heavy metals during their pre-adolescent years. One cohort had no reported cases of MS.

Adrenocortical dysplasia: a mouse model system for adrenocortical insufficiency.

A spontaneous autosomal recessive mutation causing disordered morphogenesis of the adrenal cortex has been identified in DW/J inbred strain mice and named adrenocortical dysplasia (acd). The acd mutant gene has been mapped just proximal to oligosyndactyly (Os) and esterase-1 (Es-1) in the central region of chromosome 8. Both male and female acd/acd mice are characterized by reduced survival, retarded growth, skin hyperpigmentation, poorly developed pelage and focal ureteral blockage leading to hydronephrosis.

Effects of hyperprolactinemia on ornithine decarboxylase activity and polyamine levels in seminal vesicles of genetically prolactin-deficient adult dwarf mice.

Prolactin (PRL) has been shown to exert many different actions in various biological systems. Polyamines are known to influence the growth and function of the seminal vesicles (SV). Furthermore, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is considered a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of polyamines and is regulated by PRL in certain target tissues.

Paternal inheritance of egg traits in mice: a case of genomic imprinting.

Eggs from reciprocal hybrids between the C57BL/6By and BALB/cBy strains were tested for their susceptibility to attack by hyaluronidase and pronase. There were significant reciprocal differences between the F1 females in the responses of their unfertilized eggs to both enzymes. The F1 hybrids from BALB mothers showed the increased susceptibility characteristic of C57BL whilst the F1 hybrids with C57BL mothers were more resistant to both enzymes, like BALB mice.

Lysosomal mutations increase susceptibility to anaesthetics.

The anaesthetic responses of homozygous mutant mice were compared with those of their normal heterozygous littermates. The two recessive mutations studied were beige (bg) and reduced pigmentation (rp). Homozygosity for either significantly increased the sleeping time of both sexes after treatment with pentobarbital, tribromoethanol or the steroid anaesthetic alphaxalone.

Genetic variation in testicular development in mice of the C57BL/10ScSn, C57BL/6By and BALB/cBy strains and the CXB recombinant-inbred lines.

When compared with C57BL/6By mice, BALB/cBy mice had testes that were 41% heavier at 60 days of age and seminiferous tubules that were 41% greater in cross-sectional area at 120 days. Absolute testicular weight did not increase between 60 and 120 days of age in either C57BL/6By or C57BL/10ScSn mice but did in BALB mice, paralleling changes in the size of the seminiferous tubules. Significant testicular growth took place over this age period in mice of all seven of the CXB recombinant-inbred (RI) strains of mice derived from a cross of the BALB/cBy and C57BL/6By strains.

Unequal parental contributions: genomic imprinting in mammals.

Evidence for genomic imprinting, in which the expression of genes is influenced by their parental origin, is provided by pronuclear transplantation experiments, by studies of X-chromosome inactivation and monoparental disomy, and by the analysis of the expression and methylation of certain transgenes. Both patroclinous and matroclinous patterns of mammalian inheritance occur, and germ-cell and gonadal traits as well as tumor development can be affected. To understand the processes that influence genetic inheritance, genomic imprinting must be distinguished from Y-linkage and cytoplasmic and other maternal effects.

Genotypic effects on gonadal size in fetal mice.

Fetal gonadal size was measured on Days 13, 16 and 19 of gestation in the C57BL/6ByEss (B) and BALB/cByEss (C) inbred strains, their two reciprocal F1 hybrids (CXB and BXC) and in the CXBD and CXBE recombinant inbred lines. At Day 13, CXB F1 fetuses, with C57 fathers and BALB mothers, had significantly larger testes and ovaries than did fetuses of the other 5 stocks. On Day 16, BALB fetuses had significantly larger testes than did C57, while at Day 19 C57 fetuses had significantly larger testes than did BALB fetuses.

The large flap sculptured facelift is a redraping rather than a pinching or pulling operation. The skin flaps are redraped over the tightened, sculptured underlying fat-musculoaponeurosis. This procedure can be performed on a majority of patients with minimal complications.

Genetic differences in periovum sensitivity to hyaluronidase and protease between C57BL/6, BALB and CXB recombinant mice.

The cumulus oophorus surrounding eggs from C57BL/6 mice was digested by bovine or leech hyaluronidase significantly more rapidly than that surrounding eggs from BALB/c mice. The zona pellucida of C57BL/6 eggs was also more rapidly attacked by pronase. Three other sublines of C57BL showed the same characteristics.
