Distinct brain regions are known to be associated with various emotional states. Cortical activity may be modulated by emotional states that are triggered by flavors during food intake. We examined cortical activity during chewing with different flavors and assessed the emotional modulation of cortical activity using multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy.

Effects of Interval Walking Training on Oral Health Status in Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Case-Control Study.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of walking training "Interval Walking Training (IWT)" on oral health status. Participants were divided into two groups: an exercise intervention group and a non-intervention group (control). The intervention group consisted of 59 subjects (20 males, 39 females) aged 50 years or older who participated in the IWT program in Matsumoto from 2019 to April 2022.

Factors affecting masticatory performance during the mixed dentition period.

Background: During the mixed dentition period, masticatory performance may temporarily decline as deciduous teeth are replaced by permanent teeth. This may lead to an insufficient intake of chewy foods.

[Etiology of nocturia and clinical efficacy of naftopidil on nocturia in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia--analysis of frequency volume charts].

The etiology of nocturia in 70 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) who had nocturia of two or more times were examined based on frequency volume charts (FVC). Nocturia was classified into four groups: nocturnal polyuria, low capacity, combined nocturia, and no evidence of abnormality. Nearly half of the cases had nocturnal polyuria only.

Quantitative estimation of interaction between carbohydrates and concanavalin A by surface plasmon resonance biosensor.

We measured the affinity of more than 20 sugars with concanavalin A (ConA) by an optical biosensor (surface plasmon resonance sensor) using asialofetuin (ASF) as an immobilized binding partner of ConA. We determined kinetic parameters of the effects of sugars on the dissociation of ConA from ASF quantitatively, and the structural requirements of the functional groups of sugars for binding with ConA. We found that the affinity of ConA for sugars is dependent on its conformation induced by interaction with the binding partner.

Constitutive secretion of erythropoietin by human renal adenocarcinoma cells in vivo and in vitro.

The paraneoplastic syndrome of erythrocytosis is associated with a variety of neoplasms including renal adenocarcinoma, cerebellar hemangioma, and hepatoma. We now report the characterization of the biological and molecular features of an erythropoietin-secreting human renal adenocarcinoma, designated RCCEp+. Serial transplantation of the tumor in athymic mice resulted in a dramatic increase in hematocrit and serum erythropoietin concentration.

A case of squamous cell carcinoma of the ureter with extension into the renal vein is presented. Immunoperoxidase method revealed positive staining for carcinoembryonic antigen. The literature on ureteral tumors is reviewed with special reference to renal vein involvement and carcinoembryonic antigen.

[Pure leiomyoma of prostate presenting with rectal symptoms: a case report].

Pure leiomyoma of the prostate is a rare lesion. We report a case in a 68-year-old man who presented with rectal symptoms. Rectal examination showed a stony hard nodule with irregular surface near the apex of the prostate.

Primary localized amyloidosis of the renal pelvis coexisting with transitional cell carcinoma: a case report.

Primary localized amyloidosis of renal pelvis is very rare, and only 12 cases have been reported. More than half of the reported cases were treated by nephrectomy, and the preoperative diagnosis could not be made correctly because of its resemblance to renal pelvic tumor. The ureteroscopy is a useful diagnostic means in such a condition.

2,8-Dihydroxyadenine urolithiasis due to partial deficit in adenine phosphoribosyltransferase: a case report.

Inherited metabolic diseases resulting in urolithiasis secondary to urinary excretion of insoluble substances are rare but often present as urinary obstruction of renal insufficiency. We herein report a case of partial adenine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency associated with 2,8-dihydroxyadenine urolithiasis. In family members the propositus and his younger brother are homozygotes for defective APRT genes, and who exhibits the type II phenotype designated APRT*J (Japanese type).

Treatment of gonococcal infection: an analysis of cases treated over ten years at Tokai University Hospital.

The results of gonococcal infection treatment at Tokai University Hospital during the past decade were summarized. Symptoms and signs of gonococcal urethritis and their therapeutic responses were essentially the same as in other series previously reported. Among drug regimens employed, penicillins were found most effective while cephalosporins proved to be relatively less effective.

[Immunohistochemical study of placental alkaline phosphatase in seminoma].

Indirect immunoperoxidase staining was carried out on seminomatous tumors of testes (22 specimens) using anti-placental alkaline phosphatase antibody to search for the usefulness of placental alkaline phosphatase as a tumor marker. All of the seminomas showed positive staining mainly on the cell surface. However, the normal testes and non-seminomas showed negative staining.

Autoradiographic and cytochemical localization of androgen in human prostatic cancer cell lines.

For basic studies of receptor dynamics in androgen-responsive tissues and cells, the autoradiographic and cytochemical procedures were applied to cultured tumor cells (DU-145 and PC-3). Uptake and retention of 3H-R1881, a potent synthetic androgen, were observed in DU-145 cells. The radioactive labelling was intense, and solely confined to the nuclei of DU-145 cells.

[Nonfunctioning adrenal cortical adenoma: a case report].
