Uncertainty abounds in the real world, and in environments with multiple layers of unobservable hidden states, decision-making requires resolving uncertainties based on mutual inference. Focusing on a spatial navigation problem, we develop a Tiger maze task that involved simultaneously inferring the local hidden state and the global hidden state from probabilistically uncertain observation. We adopt a Bayesian computational approach by proposing a hierarchical inference model.

Identification as well as quantification of ammonia are required in some analytical fields including forensic science. For this purpose, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis is one of the most suitable techniques. Although ammonia needs to be derivatized for GC/MS analysis, conventional derivatization reagents require anhydrous conditions because they are highly reactive with water.

Background: Somatization is regarded as psychological or emotional distress in the form of physical symptoms that are otherwise medically unexplained.

Case Presentation: We report a case of a patient with a somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and depression who was later diagnosed with anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) when Carnett's test was positive and block anesthesia using trigger point injections dramatically improved the symptom of abdominal pain.

Conclusion: We concluded that the differentiation of SSDs, such as psychogenic pain, from ACNES is very difficult.

We synthesized and evaluated novel 5-[2-(thiophen-2-yl)propan-2-yl]-4H-1,2,4-triazole derivatives as 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) inhibitors. Optimization of the thiophene ring and the substituents on the 1,2,4-triazole ring produced 3,4-dicyclopropyl-5-{2-[3-fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)thiophen-2-yl]propan-2-yl}-4H-1,2,4-triazole monohydrochloride (9a), which showed potent and selective inhibitory activity against human 11β-HSD1. Compound 9a was also metabolically stable against human and mouse liver microsomes.

Photonic networks based on wavelength-selective switches (WSSs) can transport wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) signals in a cost-effective manner. To accommodate the ever-increasing network traffic, the spectral efficiency should be maximized by minimizing the bandwidth of the guardbands inserted between WDM signals. Quasi-Nyquist WDM systems are seen as offering the highest spectral efficiency in a feasible way.

One of the most common types of urinary stones formed in humans and some other mammals is composed of calcium oxalate in ordered hydrated crystals. Many studies have reported a range of metals other than calcium in human stones, but few have looked at stones from animal models such as the dog. Therefore, we determined the elemental profile of canine calcium oxalate urinary stones and compared it to reported values from human stones.

Ten of 12 red-bellied short-necked turtles from a single clutch presented at 9 months of age with multiple white to tan nodules on their feet. Histologically, the nodules were composed of large periarticular deposits of mineralized crystalline material that extended into the joint spaces of interphalangeal joints and was surrounded by granulomatous inflammation and fibrosis. Crystallographic analysis determined the material to be apatite (calcium phosphate hydroxide) consistent with the tumoral calcinosis form of hydroxyapatite deposition disease (HADD).

Inhibitors of factor Xa (FXa), a crucial serine protease in the coagulation cascade, have attracted a great deal of attention as a target for developing antithrombotic agents. We previously reported findings from our optimization study of a high-throughput screening (HTS) derived lead compound 1a that resulted in the discovery of potent amidine-containing FXa inhibitors represented by compound 2. We also conducted an alternative optimization study of 1a without incorporating a strong basic amidine group, which generally has an adverse effect on the pharmacokinetic profile after oral administration.
