6-Arylcoumarin as a Scaffold of Photofunctional Molecules with OFF-ON-OFF Type Regulation.

Coumarin has been utilized as a core structure of photofunctional molecules, such as fluorescent sensors and photoremovable protecting groups. Here, we show that the 6-arylcoumarin moiety can provide OFF-ON-OFF type regulatory functionality for such compounds. To illustrate its utility, we synthesized a coumarin derivative bearing two phenolic hydroxy groups at 7-position and on 6-aryl group as a fluorescent sensor showing an OFF-ON-OFF change in fluorescence intensity in response to an increase in pH from a strongly acidic condition.

Methods: A total of 200 testicular cancer survivors were recruited at eight high-volume institutions in Japan. The participants completed the Japanese version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Testicular Cancer 26, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 and the International Index of Erectile Function 15 questionnaires.

Ti-Zr alloys are expected to be novel biomaterials with low stress shielding owing to their lower Young's moduli than pure Ti. The drawback of metallic biomaterials is that their bone-bonding abilities are relatively low. Introduction: The remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema syndrome primarily occurs in elderly individuals to represent symptoms of edema, pain, and joint swelling. It could be misdiagnosed in elderly maintenance hemodialysis patients, as hemodialysis patients often present with pain and joint swelling induced by hypervolemia, inflammation, amyloidosis, and/or chronic kidney disease. Here, we describe a maintenance hemodialysis patient with remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema syndrome.

Moreover, we analysed the association between urinary function and resected pattern of the autonomic nerve system (ANS) in TaTME.

Enlarged Brachial Plexus Nerve Found During Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Nerve Block Diagnosed as Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease: A Case Report.

Ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block (PNB) has become a popular anesthetic procedure. We report a case of an enlarged brachial plexus nerve noted on ultrasonographic images, as part of PNB, which was diagnosed postoperatively as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTD), an inherited neurological disorder of the peripheral nerves. Although nerve enlargement is characteristic of demyelinating diseases such as CMTD, the use of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of neurological disorders is a developing area for neurologists and anesthesiologists can lack knowledge in this emerging field.

Radiotherapy for elder patients aged ≥80 with clinically localized prostate cancer - Brachytherapy enhanced late GU toxicity especially in elderly.

Background And Purpose: Elongation of life expectancy had led to marked increase in number of elderly patients with localized prostate cancer. However, the standard treatment for such patients is not well determined because of a high prevalence of comorbidities and slow growth of prostate cancer. The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of radiotherapy for elderly patients aged ≥80 years.

Usefulness of a novel device to divide core needle biopsy specimens in a spatially matched fashion.

We developed a novel dividing device that can split needle biopsy tissues along longitude axis aiming to achieve definitive molecular-biological and genetical analysis with reference of pathological diagnosis of the side-by-side divided tissue as spatially matched information. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and potential usefulness of the novel dividing device to provide the appropriate materials for molecular diagnosis. The new device was examined using mouse xenograft tumors.

Tumor-derived exosomes influence the cell cycle and cell migration of human esophageal cancer cell lines.

Our laboratory previously reported the usefulness as biomarkers of exosomes in the plasma of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. However, the influence of tumor-derived exosomes on the tumor itself and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We here report changes in the phenotype and gene expression when cancer cells exist in an environment with tumor-derived exosomes.

Membrane mesothelin expression positivity is associated with poor clinical outcome of luminal-type breast cancer.

Mesothelin is expressed in various types of malignant tumors. The present study immunohistochemically investigated mesothelin expression and its clinicopathological significance in each subtype of breast cancer, with special reference to its cellular localization, in particular, membrane mesothelin expression. Using tissue specimens from 482 patients with breast cancer, immunohistochemistry was used to study mesothelin expression and help classify its localization as membrane or cytoplasmic expression.

Severe scoliosis with an impaired pulmonary allograft function after pediatric unilateral lung transplantation.

Left-unilateral single-lobe lung transplantation from a living donor was performed in a 4-year-old boy who suffered from severe respiratory failure caused by bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) as a result of graft versus host disease (GVHD) after peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). The patient grew well during his early childhood years, with an excellent lung allograft function. However, severe thoracic scoliosis occurred 7 years after lung transplantation, which ultimately resulted in compression of the lung allograft followed by severe respiratory dysfunction, and the patient became dependent on mechanical ventilation support.

As we move toward a society in which many people are aging and dying at the same time, it is clear that pharmacists will increasingly attend home-care patients during their final days. Our pharmacy had 295 approved home-care patients over the 10 years from 2007 to 2017, of whom 64% (189) had cancer and 36% (106) had other illnesses.
