We studied the rates of the patient with the elevation of serum creatine kinase using the routine medical checkup data from KANEMI YUSHOU patients between 1995 and 2001. We also studied the serum aldolase level and light microscopic observation of muscle tissue in rats during strenuous exercise given the polychlolinated biphenyls. Fifteen percent of the patients showed the elevation of serum creatine kinase.

In pressure-overload cardiac hypertrophy, microtubule network densification is one cause of contractile dysfunction. Cardiac transcriptional upregulation of beta1-tubulin rather than the constitutive beta4-tubulin and of microtubule-associated protein (MAP)4 accompanies hypertrophy, with extensive microtubule decoration by MAP4. Because MAP4 stabilizes microtubules, and because the isoform-variable carboxy terminus of beta-tubulin binds to MAP4, we wished to determine whether one or both of these proteins has etiologic significance for cardiac microtubule network densification.

Catalysis of Group I intron ribozymes is carried out by its core region consisting of two helical domains P4-P6 and P3-P7. Recently, our laboratory showed that a mutant Group I ribozyme lacking both the P4-P6 domain and the base-triples can perform the trans-esterification reactions. The result demonstrates that the elements required for splicing are concentrated in the P3-P7 domain.

Introduction of an asymmetric center to C-2 of one of the benzothiophene rings of bisbenzothienylperfluorocyclopentene results in a highly diastereoselective photochromic system. The stereogenic center bears a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, and a methoxymethoxy group. The steric as well as the electronic repulsions gave an 87-88% diastereomer excess in various solvents at room temperature with 80-85% conversion to the colored form.

In large mammals there is a correlation between microtubule network densification and contractile dysfunction in severe pressure-overload hypertrophy. In small mammals there is a similar correlation for the shift to beta-myosin heavy chain (MHC), a MHC isoform having a slower ATPase Vmax. A series of novel synthetic monohydroxy polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs) (5 trichloro-, 5 tetrachloro- and 5 pentachloro-compounds) have been characterized (1H and 13C NMR and high resolution MS) and their estrogenic and thyroid hormone activities assessed using a yeast two-hybrid assay, both with and without possible metabolic activation by rat liver S9 preparation. Moderate estrogenic activity was found for 2,3,4(')-trichlorobiphenyl-4-ol (compound 5) but this was eliminated when exposed to the S9 mix. 2,2('),3('),4,6-Pentachlorobiphenyl-3-ol (13) and 2('),3,3('),6-tetrachlorobiphenyl-4-ol (10) both showed weak estrogenicity in the absence of the S9 mix.

QT dispersion is thought to reflect a regional difference in repolarization process although QT interval is composed of depolarization and repolarization. This study was designed to investigate the effect of depolarization and repolarization on QT dispersion in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Standard 12-lead ECG was recorded in 70 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients with anteroseptal wall hypertrophy (HC-As), 8 patients with lateral wall hypertrophy (HC-L), 8 patients with diffuse hypertrophy (HC-D), and 46 normal controls.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals such as organochlorines have been detected in a large number of marine fish. Histological observation of the gonads, measurement of serum vitellogenin (VTG) level and of liver polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) content were performed to evaluate the reproductive health and the contamination with endocrine disruptors in bigeye tuna Thunnus obesus, collected in the northern Pacific Ocean in 1999 and 2000. Abnormalities commonly found in species affected by endocrine disruptors such as the presence of oocytes in the testis or elevated serum VTG levels were not found in any of males examined.

We report a 42-year-old female with continuous muscle stiffness and painful muscle spasms of the right leg. The symptoms developed suddenly and worsened over the week after onset. An analytical procedure for the determination of steroid estrogens and their conjugates was developed and applied to aqueous environmental samples. The analytes of 15 compounds were solid-phase extracted and fractionated into two fractions: one containing unconjugated (free) steroids and the other containing conjugates (sulfates and glucuronides). In vitro and in vivo selection techniques are developed to constitute new RNA-peptide interactions. The selection strategy is designed by employing a catalytic RNP consisting of a derivative of the Tetrahymena ribozyme and an artificial RNA-binding protein. The aim of this study was to clarify whether autoimmunity against P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) in the cerebellum was associated with the pathogenesis of paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). We used human autopsy cerebellar tissues from three PCD-LEMS patients and six other disease patients including one with LEMS as the controls. We compared cerebellar P/Q-type VGCC in these patients and controls for the amount and ratio of autoantibody-channel complex using an 125I-omega-conotoxin MVIIC-binding assay with Scatchard analysis, and their distribution using autoradiography.

Background: The A-rich bulge of the group I intron ribozyme, a highly conserved structural element in its P5 peripheral region, plays a significant role in activating the ribozyme. The bulge has been known to interact with the P4 stem forming P4 XJ6/7 base-triples in the conserved core. The base-triples by themselves have also been identified as a distinctive element responsible for enhancing the activity of the ribozyme.

The authors characterized the clinical and immunologic features of 110 patients with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). Anti-P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC) antibodies were detected in 85% of the patients (seropositive) but not in the rest (seronegative). Except for the indication that small cell lung carcinoma is less common in seronegative patients, no significant differences were found in the clinical characteristics of patients who had or did not have anti-P/Q-type VGCC antibodies.

The excitability change of the brainstem was investigated before and during the conspicuous epileptic discharge in six patients with generalized convulsive seizures. The discharge consisted of a short duration of recruiting rhythm, which was considered equivalent to the seizure discharge on electroencephalogram. The excitability of the brainstem was measured with the parameters (amplitude and area) of component waves (wave-III and -V) of brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

Tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy is a well-known and reversible condition, but the left ventricular dysfunction caused by frequent isolated premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) has been rarely reported. Apparent dilated cardiomyopathy was resolved in a patient after the focal source of PVCs was eliminated by radiofrequency catheter ablation. Echocardiography showed progressive improvement of the abnormal wall motion.

Two-month flow-through exposure experiments of tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) were conducted with abalone, Haliotis gigantea. Nominal concentrations of 100 ng TBT/l and 100 ng TPhT/l caused significant spermatogenesis in ovaries of exposed females. There were also significantly more contracted primary oocytes observed in females exposed to either TBT or TPhT than controls.

Previous research has demonstrated the modulation of neutrophil function and kinetics, such as development and maturation, by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The cases of two female patients who underwent reconstructive surgery using free vascularized fibular bone grafting of the proximal humerus are reported. Both patients were evaluated 1 year postoperatively for active range of motion; an Enneking evaluation and activities-of-daily-living (housework) assessment were also done. Patient 1 regained flexion and abduction to 110 degrees, and patient 2 regained flexion and abduction to 90 degrees.
