Antibodies to myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein in idiopathic optic neuritis.

Objectives: To investigate the differences of clinical features, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), MRI findings and response to steroid therapies between patients with optic neuritis (ON) who have myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibodies and those who have seronegative ON.

Setting: We recruited participants in the department of neurology and ophthalmology in our hospital in Japan.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical features and response to steroid therapies of patients with ON.

A third heart sound (S3) and a fourth heart sound (S4) are similarly perceived as low-pitched sounds and can be difficult to distinguish in some conditions, such as tachycardia or arrhythmia. We report a case with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and Wenckebach second-degree atrioventricular block, in which the S4 was initially misdiagnosed as an S3 on auscultation and later confirmed using a phonocardiogram with an apexcardiogram. Interestingly, the amplitude of the S4 dynamically and regularly fluctuated in proportion to the interval between the S4 and the preceding ventricular contraction.

Comparison of different urine pretreatments for biological monitoring of pyrethroid insecticides.

During a cross-validation practice of urinary analysis of pyrethroid insecticide metabolite (3-phenoxybenzoic acid, 3-PBA) by two laboratories (Lab A and Lab B), difference in 3-PBA concentration was noticed. The analytical methods used in the exercise were enzymatic deconjugation (glucuronidase/sulfatase) followed by solid phase extraction and isotope dilution LC-MS-MS determination (Lab A) and acidic deconjugation followed by liquid-liquid extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry determination (Lab B). A significant difference was found for one of the five samples: lower value was obtained in Lab A.

In vivo SPECT imaging of amyloid-β deposition with radioiodinated imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivative DRM106 in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Unlabelled: Noninvasive determination of amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) deposition has important significance for early diagnosis and medical intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the present study, we investigated the availability of radiolabeled DRM106 ((123/125)I-DRM106 [6-iodo-2-[4-(1H-3-pyrazolyl)phenyl]imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine]), a compound with sufficient affinity for the synthesis of human Aβ fibrils and satisfactory metabolic stability, as a SPECT ligand in living brains.

Method: The sensitivity of (125)I-DRM106 for detecting Aβ deposition was compared with that of (125)I-IMPY (2-(4'-dimethylaminophenyl)-6-iodo-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine), a well-known amyloid SPECT ligand, by ex vivo autoradiographic analyses in 18-mo-old amyloid precursor protein transgenic mice.

Verruciform xanthoma: report of three patients with comparative dermoscopic study.

We report three cases of verruciform xanthoma (VX) in male patients aged 82, 88 and 39 years, respectively. The clinical appearance was of a mulberry-like area consisting of small papillae, which is typical of and specific to VX, and the diagnosis were histologically confirmed in all cases. Dermoscopy revealed that each surface papilla contained linear or hairpin vessels, which were surrounded by a marginal whitish rim.

Although oral sensory feedback is essential for mastication, whether the cortical activity elicited by oral stimulation is associated with the preferred chewing side (PCS) is unclear. Somatosensory evoked fields were measured in 12 healthy volunteers (6 with the right side as the PCS and 6 with the left side as the PCS) following tongue and hard palate stimulation. Three components were identified over the contralateral (P40m, P60m, and P80m) and ipsilateral [P40m(I), P60m(I), and P80m(I)] hemispheres.

Angioscopic observation in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension before and after balloon pulmonary angioplasty.

Pyrethroid insecticides have been shown to possess thyroid hormone disrupting properties in previous animal studies. In this study, the relationship between maternal exposure to pyrethroid insecticides during pregnancy and neonatal thyroid hormone status (free thyroxine (fT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in whole blood) and birth sizes were explored in 147 mother-neonate pairs in Tokyo. The concentration of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) in maternal urine, sampled in the first trimester of gestation, was used for pyrethroid exposure assessment.

Purpose: We evaluated whether magnetoencephalography (MEG), in addition to surgery, was valuable for the diagnosis and management of epileptic syndromes in patients with neocortical epilepsy (NE).

Methods: We studied MEG in 73 patients (29 females; aged 1-26years; mean 10.3years) for the clinical diagnosis of epilepsy and for preoperative evaluation.

We investigated effects of severe hypoxia (dissolved oxygen <1 ml l(-1)) on recruitment of mantis shrimp Oratosquilla oratoria in Tokyo Bay. Ten-year field surveys were conducted to examine quantitative relationships in annual mean densities of larvae and juveniles, and spatial distribution of juveniles and severe hypoxia. There was no significant correlation between annual mean densities of larvae and juveniles, suggesting that mortality during larval or juvenile stages varies among years, which might have regulated abundance of young-of-the-year juveniles.

Immunoassays are useful methods for the determination of regulated drugs in clinical and forensic laboratories. Although the Instant-View M-1 (IV M-1) immunoassay kit is frequently used to screen drugs in laboratories in Japan, basic information about the IV M-1 such as its specificity and reactivity is not available. In this study, we determined the specificity and cross-reactivity of IV M-1 for the detection of benzodiazepine-related drugs and their metabolites in urine.

Pyrethroid insecticide exposure and reproductive hormone levels in healthy Japanese male subjects.

The associations between serum levels of reproductive hormones (follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin, inhibin B and calculated free testosterone) and urinary metabolite concentration of pyrethroid insecticides [3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA)] were explored in 322 male university students in suburban Tokyo. The subjects constituted part of a large cross-sectional survey on the reference value of semen quality of Japanese men. Urinary 3-PBA was detectable in 91% of the subjects demonstrating ubiquitous exposure among the general population.

Right half-field eye patching may not be an effective approach for chronic hemispatial neglect--a two-case investigation.

Right half-field eye-patched glasses intervention was performed in two chronic stroke patients with unilateral spatial neglect. Eye movement on the neglect side, the center of gravity as an index of the internal midline bias, neglect sign tests, and the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were measured before and after intervention. The improvement of eye movement was not shown clearly after intervention.

[Assessment of validity of the archived standard curve in endotoxin assay].

The archived standard curve of endotoxin assay was evaluated to be possible to be used for the endotoxin assay as the reliable standard curve, instead the standard curve was produced each time of the assay. The archived standard curve shall be produced from three standard curves for three days, following the guidance issued from FDA in 1991, and the evaluation whether the archived standard curves can be applicable to use daily was performed with the recovery rate of the concentrations obtained from the archived standard curves against the true values. The three case studies were prepared: (1) the same person, who prepared the archived standard curves, performed this assay with the standard solutions (repeatability condition with the same tester, at the same facility), (2) the person, who did not prepare the archived standard curves, performed this assay with standard solutions (reproducibility condition with the different tester and dates), (3) the same preparation as (1), but using different three lots of lysates.
