Depression is one of the most common mental disorders. The inactivation of tryptophan hydroxylase and the resulting serotonin decrease are the key factors in depression pathology. Herein, we report for the first time that FeO nanoparticles exhibit tryptophan hydroxylase-like activity and successfully verify their ability to restore serotonin synthesis in the brain for the treatment of depression.

Objective To evaluate whether Vibrio vulnificus secreted exotoxin-hemolysin (VVH) can activate platelet, an important blood immune cell, and to explore the possible molecular mechanism of platelet activation by VVH. Methods Transcriptomics and immunohistochemistry were used to analyze whether Vibrio vulnificus infection caused platelet activation in mice. Then, flow cytometry was used to identify whether VVH was the main stimulator of platelet activation.

Proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) are dual-functional molecules composed of a protein of interest (POI) ligand and an E3 ligase ligand connected by a linker, which can recruit POI and E3 ligases simultaneously, thereby inducing the degradation of POI and showing great potential in disease treatment. A challenge in developing PROTACs is the design of linkers and the modification of ligands to establish a multifunctional platform that enhances degradation efficiency and antitumor activity. As a programmable and modifiable nanomaterial, DNA tetrahedron can precisely assemble and selectively recognize molecules and flexibly adjust the distance between molecules, making them ideal linkers.

Rh(III)-catalyzed dual N-H and triple C-H activation/(4 + 2) annulation of 2-aryl-2,3-dihydro-1-perimidines and alkynes has been disclosed to construct 4,5,14,15-tetrasubstituted cationic azaperylenes with high yields (up to 95%) and broad scope. Tandem (4 + 2) annulation of 1-perimidines with vinylene carbonate and alkynes affords 4,5-disubstituted azaperylene salts, and -alkynyl 1-perimidines undergo an intra- and intermolecular annulation cascade to give 4,5,14-trisubstituted targets. Most of the intermediates were detected by ESI-MS, indicating a convincible mechanism including three possible paths.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored root traits of 100 winter wheat genotypes under various stress conditions including low phosphorus and drought.
  • Significant changes in root characteristics were noted, with drought reducing biomass and phosphorus content, while promoting deeper root growth.
  • The findings indicate that certain root traits are highly heritable and can be targeted in breeding programs to create wheat varieties that are more resilient to environmental stresses.

Background: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) patients with bacterial infections usually exhibit high mortality rates. Infections frequently involve bacteria such as Vibrio vulnificus and Enterococcus faecalis. Nevertheless, the mechanisms predisposing ALD patients to bacterial infections and the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome in the intestinal epithelial barrier in ALD remain unclear.

Synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) play significant roles in soil health and sustainable agriculture. In this study, bacterial SynComs (SCBs) and fungal SynComs (SCFs) were constructed by selecting microbial species that could degrade the potato root exudates associated with continuous cropping obstacles. SCBs, SCFs, and SCB + SCF combinations were then inoculated into organic fertilizers (OFs, made from sheep manure) to produce three bio-organic fertilizers (BOFs), denoted by SBFs (BOFs of inoculated SCBs), SFFs (BOFs of inoculated SCFs), and SBFFs (BOFs of inoculated SCB + SCF combinations), respectively.

Sequestering farmland for secondary succession is an effective method of restoring ecosystem services to degraded farmland, but long-term secondary succession often alters ecosystem environments, resources, and substrate stoichiometry. Currently, it is not known how resource changes and stoichiometric imbalances due to secondary succession affect soil microbial community structure and function, hindering our understanding of the natural resilience for degraded ecosystems. Here, we assessed nutrient limitation elements, community structure, metabolic functions, co-occurrence network complexity, and community stability of soil microorganisms during secondary succession of abandoned farmlands on the Loess Plateau.

Background: Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) is a major subtype of renal cell carcinoma with poor prognosis due to its invasive and metastatic nature. Despite advances in understanding the molecular underpinnings of various cancers, the role of branched-chain amino acid transferase 1 (BCAT1) in KIRC remains underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the oncogenic role of BCAT1 in KIRC using single-cell RNA-seq data and experimental validation.

Article Synopsis
  • Transition metal-catalyzed C-H annulation reactions have been commonly used to synthesize N-protected cinnolines, but previously, cinnolin-4(1)-ones remained unattainable.
  • The study introduces a new method for creating cinnolin-4(1)-ones using Rh(III) or Ru(II) catalysts combined with a sequence of reactions involving cyclic hydrazides and vinylene carbonate.
  • The research also highlights the significance of π-conjugation in the directing groups and provides detailed mechanistic insights through the characterization of a seven-membered enolic Rh species using mass spectroscopy.

Background: Cytokine network disturbances in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) have been reported in many studies. However, their functions in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome and interstitial lung disease (pSS-ILD) is controversial. In this study, we aim to investigate the associations of immunological characteristics and cytokine profiles with pSS-ILD pathogenesis and explore their predictive values for pSS progression.

Telomere length plays a crucial role in cellular aging and the risk of diseases. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells can extend their own survival by maintaining telomere stability through telomere maintenance mechanism. Therefore, regulating the lengths of telomeres have emerged as a promising approach for anti-cancer treatment.

In this paper, we present a new type of isolator based on one-way surface magnetoplasmons (SMPs) at microwave frequencies, and it is the first time that an experimental prototype of isolator with wideband and ultra-high isolation is realized using SMP waveguide. The proposed model with gyromagnetic and dielectric layers is systematically analyzed to obtain the dispersion properties of all the possible modes, and a one-way SMP mode is found to have the unidirectional transmission property. In simulation and experiment with metallic waveguide loaded with yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) ferrite, the scattering parameters and the field distributions agree well with the analysis and verify the one-way transmission property.

Prolonging the residence time of drugs in the lumen and propelling them into deep lesions are highly desired for intraluminal drug administration. However, rapid drug efflux caused by dynamic intraluminal contents limits sustained drug concentrations, causing poor pharmaceutical absorption and reduced efficacy. Here, we combined theory and experiments to demonstrate a distinctive drug delivery strategy using clinically available medical ultrasound technology.

Metasurfaces are capable of fully reshaping the wavefronts of incident beams in desired manners. However, the requirement for external light excitation and the resonant nature of their meta-atoms, make challenging their on-chip integration. Here, we introduce the concept and design of a fresh class of metasurfaces, driven by unidirectional guided waves, capable of arbitrary wavefront control based on the unique dispersion properties of unidirectional guided waves rather than resonant meta-atoms.
