Seventy patients aged 20 to 75 years with suspected parotid gland disease were examined to study the capabilities of an ultrasound study in the diagnosis of neoplasms of the major salivary glands. B-mode ultrasonography and color Doppler imaging presented a means of detecting the presence of masses in the gland, their topography and dimensions, and specific vascularization, which allowed the option and scope of treatment to be planned.

Morphological structure of bone tissue was studied in various types of congenital deformations of the jaws. Morphological changes in the bone with deformations and the severity of these disorders depended not so much on the type on the deformation, but mainly on its severity, which can be explained by a drastic increase of functional exercise because of impaired occlusion and impossibility of proper chewing. Decelerated weak restructuring of bone tissue and imperfect osteogenesis in deformed bone, similar in various types of deformations, were demonstrated on morphological material.

Sixty-three patients with congenital and acquired defects and deformations of facial bones without concomitant diseases were examined. Twenty-eight of them were operated on; auto- and alloplasty was resorted to in 18 patients, and to 10 patients tactivin was administered after common protocols for immunocorrection before or after surgery. Immunologic and clinical studies showed that immunodeficiency states are the most probable causes of postoperative complications following repair surgery on the facial bones.

A study was made of diagnostic significance (sensitivity and specificity) of early (precritical) signs of late gestosis (LG). A total of 179 females (187 pregnancies) with essential hypertension (EH) and chronic renal diseases (CRD) were examined. EH women are at high risk of LG when they have proteinuria above 0.

Analysis of changes in immunological and biochemical parameters in patients operated on for congenital deformations of the jaw bones and improperly grown fractures showed that postoperative therapy including hyperbaric oxygenation sessions was conducive to increase of immunological reactivity in patients with initially reduced immunological reactivity. No changes in urinary excretion of hydroxyproline were observed in the patients with deformations of the jaws.

Time course of 187 pregnancies was followed up in 103 females with chronic renal diseases (CRD), 76 females with essential hypertension (EH) and 14 posteclampsia females. Three variants of arterial pressure (AP) and 5 types of proteinuria changes were recognized in CRD and EH patients. The pattern of these changes was compared to that in posteclampsia patients, the eclampsia being an absolute criterium of late toxicosis.

The authors describe their management policy with pregnant patients suffering from portal hypertension syndrome, based on the results of comprehensive examinations and deliveries in 44 women. Principal indications for abortions in such patients are active liver cirrhosis, third-degree varicosity of esophageal and gastric veins, dilatation of the esophagus. Natural labor is permitted when there are no threatened bleedings.

Analysis of changes in the immunologic and biochemical parameters in the patients operated on for congenital deformations of the maxillary bones and poorly joined fractures has shown an increase of the immunologic reactivity under the effect of hyperbaric oxygenation therapy administered after surgery to patients with initially reduced levels of these parameters. Urinary excretion of hydroxyproline was found unchanged in patients with maxillary deformations.

Clinical and morphological analysis of 21 cases with recurrences of polymorphic adenoma of the salivary glands has shown that recurring tumors are characterized by multinodular pattern, may be located in fatty tissue, thickness of the derma, or along the operation cicatrix, are stiff, tuberous, and join the adjacent tissues. The myxoid component predominates in the tumor structure. The authors consider that the cause of recurrences is injury to the tumor capsule during removal of the primary node with dissemination of the tumor substance in the operation site tissues.
