Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in landfill leachate impacts the toxicity, bioavailability, and migration of heavy metals. The present study investigated the complexation of heavy metals (Cu and Pb) with DOM from two landfill leachate samples, representing an old landfill site containing incineration residues and incombustible waste. The logarithms of the stability constant (log K) and percentage of complexed fluorophores were calculated using both the Ryan-Weber non-linear model and the modified Stern-Volmer model, yielding good agreement.

Cesarean scar disorder (CSDi) is a newly recognized cause of secondary infertility. Laparoscopic or hysteroscopic surgery is generally chosen for the surgical treatment of CSDi, depending on the residual myometrial thickness of the cesarean scar. Previously, hysteroscopic transcervical resection for CSDi (TCR-CSDi) has been reported to be a safe procedure, with no cases of postoperative cervical stenosis.

Aims: Excessive occlusal force with periodontitis leads to rapid alveolar bone resorption. However, the molecular mechanism by which inflammation and mechanical stress cause bone resorption remains unclear. We examined the role of Piezo1, a mechanosensitive ion channel expressed on osteoblasts, in the changes in the receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) ratio in mouse MC3T3-E1 osteoblast-like cells under Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (P.

The toxic effects of lead (Pb) are an ongoing concern for which research continues to seek a solution. In Pb-contaminated areas, Pb concentrations in the environment and organisms are quantified to assess the degree of contamination. Understanding organismal uptake of Pb and its behavior in the body requires distinguishing Pb chemical species.

Motivation: Extended connectivity interaction features (ECIF) is a method developed to predict protein-ligand binding affinity, allowing for detailed atomic representation. It performed very well in terms of Comparative Assessment of Scoring Functions 2016 (CASF-2016) scoring power. However, ECIF has the limitation of not being able to adequately account for interatomic distances.

We have developed an innovative system, AI QM Docking Net (AQDnet), which utilizes the three-dimensional structure of protein-ligand complexes to predict binding affinity. This system is novel in two respects: first, it significantly expands the training dataset by generating thousands of diverse ligand configurations for each protein-ligand complex and subsequently determining the binding energy of each configuration through quantum computation. Second, we have devised a method that incorporates the atom-centered symmetry function (ACSF), highly effective in describing molecular energies, for the prediction of protein-ligand interactions.

The effects of sewage sludge phosphorus (P) content on heavy metal behavior during co-incineration of sewage sludge and municipal solid waste (MSW) were evaluated. Thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis revealed that MSW incineration was mainly caused by organic matter and fixed carbon, while sewage sludge incineration was caused by volatile matter. During co-incineration, the peak weight loss at 460 °C shifted to slightly higher temperatures and the sludge ratio increased, indicating that interaction effects during co-incineration delayed pyrolysis and polymer/fixed carbon incineration.

Factors associated with chronic elevation of the blood lactate levels in patients undergoing chronic maintenance hemodialysis (hereinafter, hemodialysis patients) have not yet been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of the present study was to clarify factors associated with elevated blood lactate levels in hemodialysis patients. We divided the hemodialysis patients into two groups according the blood lactate levels (the high blood lactate group [> 2 mmol/L] and normal blood lactate group), and conducted a retrospective comparison of the following items between the two groups: (1) the creatinine generation rate (%CGR) and the geriatric nutrition risk index (GNRI) as indices of the nutritional status; (2) the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and E/A, an indicator of diastolic function; (3) the ankle-brachial index (ABI) and transcutaneous partial pressure of oxygen as indices of the adequacy of circulation in the peripheral blood vessels of the lower extremities; (4) the white blood cell count and serum level of C-reactive protein (CRP) before dialysis as markers of an inflammatory state.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC), which includes breast cancer diagnosed during pregnancy and up to a year after childbirth, focusing on treatment trends and long-term outcomes.
  • - It found that patients diagnosed with breast cancer after childbirth (LBC) tend to have more severe clinical characteristics and poorer survival rates compared to those diagnosed during pregnancy (PBC), particularly between surgeries performed before and after 2005.
  • - The conclusion emphasizes that early detection and better systemic treatment strategies are essential for improving the prognosis of LBC patients, as their worse outcomes are largely attributed to more advanced disease at the time of diagnosis rather than inherent biological factors.

The decomposition mechanism of hydrazine nitrate in nitric acid solutions was investigated using quantum chemistry calculations combined with the polarizable continuum model at the CBS-QB3//ωB97X-D/SMD level of theory. These calculations provided a detailed kinetic model incorporating rate coefficients and thermodynamic data. Rate coefficients were determined using traditional transition state theory, while diffusion-limited reactions were modeled based on the Einstein-Stokes equations.

We evaluated mercury (Hg) behavior in a full-scale sewage sludge torrefaction plant with a capacity of 150 wet tons/day, which operates under a nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature range of 250-350 °C. Thermodynamic calculations and monitoring results show that elemental Hg (Hg) was the dominant species in both the pyrolysis gas during the torrefaction stage and in the flue gas from downstream air pollution control devices. A wet scrubber (WS) effectively removed oxidized Hg from the flue gas and moved Hg to wastewater, and an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) removed significant particulate-bound Hg but showed a limited capacity for overall Hg removal.

A spin-polarized state is examined under charge current at room temperature without magnetic fields in chiral disilicide crystals NbSi_{2} and TaSi_{2}. We found that a long-range spin transport occurs over ten micrometers in these inorganic crystals. A distribution of crystalline grains of different handedness is obtained via location-sensitive electrical transport measurements.

Background: Various malformations are frequently encountered in spontaneously aborted embryos and fetuses. Thus, spontaneous abortion appears to be a screening device for abnormal conceptuses ("teratothanasia"). However, the prevalence rate of abnormal conceptuses at each gestational stage is unknown and the true picture of prenatal natural selection remains to be elucidated.
