Yawning behavior is characterized by mouth opening accompanied by deep inspiration, as well as arousal response, and is often observed not only in states of boredom or drowsiness, but also in stressful emotional situations in humans and animals. The neural mechanism by which negative air ions (NAI) mediate the regulation of autonomic nervous system activity is still unknown.
