Differentiating patients by age and causative bacterial morphology might aid in making the appropriate choice of antimicrobial agent when treating acute uncomplicated cystitis. In this retrospective analysis, the non-susceptibility rates of the causative bacteria to cefcapene-pivoxil (CFPN-PI) and levofloxacin (LVFX) were determined after dividing patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis by age group (15-54 and 55-74 years old) and by bacterial morphology: gram-positive cocci (GPC) or gram-negative rod (GNR). The overall non-susceptibility rates for CFPN-PI and LVFX were 19.

Article Synopsis
  • The Urogenital Sub-committee and Surveillance Committee of various Japanese health organizations conducted a nationwide study to assess how susceptible Chlamydia trachomatis is to different antibiotics by collecting clinical samples from 26 hospitals between May 2016 and July 2017.
  • The study measured the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for a range of antibiotics, finding no resistant strains to fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, or macrolides, while solithromycin showed particularly favorable MIC values.
  • However, the MIC for azithromycin was slightly higher than in previous reports, suggesting the need for ongoing monitoring of its susceptibility.

Upper urinary tract calculi are common; however, there is no recommended treatment selection for elderly patients. Ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy (URS lithotripsy) is minimally invasive, and it provides a high stone-free rate (SFR) treatment for upper urinary tract calculi. Here, we retrospectively evaluated the surgical outcomes of URS lithotripsy after dividing the 189 cases into 3 groups by patient age: the '<65 group' (<65 years old, n=108), the '65-74 group' (65-74 years old, n=42), and the ' 75 group' ( 75 years old, n=39).

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed bacterial strains from urine samples of UTI patients at Okayama University Hospital over 30 years to identify species trends and antimicrobial resistance.
  • In the first decade, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common isolate, followed by MRSA in the second decade, and Escherichia coli dominating in the last decade, especially in uncomplicated UTIs.
  • The findings indicate that despite a decrease in P. aeruginosa and MRSA, the rise of E. coli strains, including those resistant to fluoroquinolones, necessitates ongoing monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in urinary tract infections.*

Unlabelled: The term nanobacteria, sometimes referred to as nanobacteria-like particles (NLPs), is presently recognized as a misnomer for inert calcified nanoparticles. However, misinterpretation of its propagation as a living organism still continues. Ultrastructural and elemental analyses, combining immuno-electron microscopy with an original NLP isolate (P-17) derived from urinary stones, and an IgM monoclonal antibody (CL-15) raised against P-17 have now revealed that, oxidized lipids with acidified functional groups were key elements in NLP propagation.
