Constipation causes substantial morbidity worldwide. This survey assessed constipation-related factors in Japan using the Japanese version of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life (IBS-QOL-J) instrument. We also examined the relationship among laxative type, Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) scores, and treatment cost.

Article Synopsis
  • As people get older and take certain medications, they might experience bleeding in their lower intestines, often caused by a condition called colonic diverticular bleeding (CDB).
  • A study looked at two groups of patients with CDB: one group had an urgent procedure called urgent colonoscopy (UCS), and the other group did not.
  • Results showed that having the UCS didn't really help reduce bleeding or improve how long patients stayed in the hospital, suggesting UCS isn't needed for CDB patients who don't have bleeding on scans.

Detailed evaluations of body mass index (BMI) and stool form based on the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) in individuals with constipation, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and concomitant constipation and GERD have not been performed in Japan. This study was an internet survey conducted to examine the relationships between BMI and constipation, GERD, stool forms based on the BSFS, and education level. This internet-based survey recruited participants from general public survey panels.

Objective Vonoprazan (VPZ), clarithromycin (CAM), metronidazole (MNZ) and VPZ, MNZ, and sitafloxacin (STFX) regimen are all established Helicobacter pylori eradication therapies for patients with penicillin allergy in Japan. However, no study has assessed the efficacy of a VPZ, CAM, and MNZ (VCM) regimen in patients with clarithromycin resistance (CAM-R). We therefore assessed the efficacy of a VCM regimen for treating H.

A 46-year-old man, receiving continuous steroid therapy for refractory ulcerative colitis with an insufficient response to anti-tumor necrosis factor-α therapy, presented with left buttock pain. He was diagnosed with steroidal left femoral head necrosis, and total proctocolectomy with permanent ileostomy was performed. At 6 months postoperatively, the patient developed general fatigue, abdominal pain, and severe ileostomy diarrhea.

Herein, we describe a case of olmesartan-related sprue-like enteropathy in which improvement in villous atrophy was confirmed by small-bowel capsule endoscopy (CE). We successfully treated a 66-year-old man with a chief complaint of loose diarrhea. The patient had persistent watery diarrhea 10 times a day and experienced a weight loss of 9 kg in 3 months.

A 62-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed an approximately 7-cm-diameter tumor in the left abdomen with metastatic lymph nodes, an approximately 1-cm-diameter round tumor in contact with the subclavian artery in the apical lobe of the right lung, and mediastinal lymph node enlargement in contact with the superior vena cava. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy revealed no abnormalities.

Gastric plexiform fibromyxoma is extremely rare. In our case, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy of a 41-year-old woman patient revealed a 1-cm submucosal tumor (SMT) in the greater curvature of the lower body of the stomach. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography, the tumor was hypervascular in the arterial phase with continuous enhancement in the post-venous phase.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the relationship between the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and a new endoscopic sign called the scope holding sign (SHS) in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • Researchers performed high-resolution manometry (HRM) and endoscopy on GERD patients to measure resting LES pressure while observing SHS, comparing pressures when the lower esophagus held or released the endoscope.
  • Results showed that LES pressure was significantly higher when SHS was positive, suggesting the sphincter can be visualized during endoscopy, paving the way for better evaluation of LES function in GERD patients.

Background: Functional constipation (FC), a functional bowel disorder with symptoms of constipation, has considerable impact on quality of life. As data regarding its prevalence and epidemiology are lacking, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, population composition, lifestyle, quality of life, and clinical characteristics of these individuals by comparing people with and without FC. These parameters were also compared among individuals with strong and weak awareness of constipation.

Background/aims: Detailed evaluations of overlapping constipation and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have not been conducted in Japan. The REACTION-J2 study examined the overlap of these diseases in Japan.

Methods: This internet-based survey recruited participants from general public survey panels.

Article Synopsis
  • Image-enhanced magnifying endoscopy improves the detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal lesions, but existing classifications can confuse general gastroenterologists.
  • The Unified Magnifying Endoscopic Classification (UMEC) was developed to be a simpler, organ-agnostic system that categorizes lesions into non-neoplasia, intramucosal neoplasia, and deep submucosal invasive cancer.
  • In a feasibility pilot study, two experienced endoscopists evaluated 303 lesions using UMEC, achieving high diagnostic accuracy (approximately 84-89%) and good agreement between observers, suggesting UMEC's practicality and effectiveness for general use.

Aseptic abscesses (AAs) are extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD-associated AAs are rare in Japan. We treated a 45-year-old man with ulcerative colitis (UC)-associated AAs.

Objectives: Per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a safe and effective treatment for achalasia and esophageal motility disorders. The role of second-look endoscopy (SE) on postoperative day 1 has not been examined. This study aimed to evaluate the findings and need of SE after POEM.

The role of enterobacterial flora in the onset and progression of inflammatory bowel diseases is a topic of considerable interest. Here, we assessed the association among enterobacterial flora, dietary factors, and ulcerative colitis (UC) progression. Forty-six patients with UC who were diagnosed as being in remission were enrolled.

Background And Aims: The prevalence of clarithromycin resistant bacteria is increasing, and the effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) triple therapy is gradually decreasing in Japan. Vonoprazan, a potassiumcompetitive acid blocker, has been reported for its effectiveness in eradicating H.

We experienced marked efficacy with steroid treatment of three patients with jackhammer esophagus (JHE). An esophageal biopsy revealed eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in two patients. One of the patients without EoE had eosinophilia and an increased serum immunoglobulin E level, and endoscopic ultrasonography revealed thickening of the esophageal muscularis propria.

  • A research study in Japan looked into constipation to understand how common it is and what factors affect it.
  • Out of 10,000 people surveyed, about 51.5% realized they had constipation, and many reported using laxatives to help.
  • The study found that people with harder stools had a lower quality of life, and many patients aren't getting enough help from doctors for their constipation.

  • This study explores the effects of acotiamide in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) and heartburn who didn't respond to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), suggesting a potential treatment for what is termed PPI-resistant non-erosive reflux disease (NERD).
  • In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 16 subjects, participants were given acotiamide or a placebo for 28 days and then switched after a break. Results showed significant improvements in symptoms and esophageal functions in the acotiamide group compared to the placebo.
  • The conclusion indicates that adding acotiamide to PPI therapy could enhance upper gastrointestinal functions and relieve symptoms in FD patients who haven't benefited
