Metastasis in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma has been associated with a poor prognosis. However, sensitive and reliable tests for monitoring their occurrence are unavailable, with the exception of PET-CT. Circulating tumor cells and cell-free DNA have emerged as promising biomarkers for determining treatment efficacy and as prognostic predictors in solid tumors such as breast cancer and colorectal cancer.

Clinical significance and biological role of claudin-1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma cells.

Objectives: Claudin (CLD), a major component of tight junctions, is a four-transmembrane protein, and 24 subtypes have been reported in humans. CLD expression is highly tissue-specific; CLD1 has been reported to be expressed in the skin and mucosa. There have been few reports on CLD1 expression and its function in oral cancer.

Prospective evaluation of automated vascular analysis for ilio-femoral artery lesions before and after percutaneous endovascular aortic repair.

Background: This study was conducted to evaluate the differences between pre- and postoperative access conditions in percutaneous endovascular aortic repair (PEVAR).

Methods: Between December 2021 and October 2023, PEVAR was performed on 61 patients using the Perclose ProStyle (Abbott Vascular). Enhanced computed tomography and ankle-brachial index tests were performed preoperatively and postoperatively.

The impact of gut and oral microbiota on the clinical outcomes of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is unknown. We compared the bacterial composition of dental plaque and feces between patients with OSCC and healthy controls (HCs). Fecal and dental plaque samples were collected from 7 HCs and 18 patients with OSCC before treatment initiation.

Background: Conventional graft replacement for a juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (JRAAA) remains challenging for high-risk patients since it often requires the reconstruction of some visceral arteries.

Case Presentation: A 76-year-old woman was diagnosed with an 87 × 48 mm saccular JRAAA. Open graft replacement was contraindicated because of frailty and a past history of trans-thoracoabdominal esophagectomy.

Tumor lysis syndrome following letrozole for locally advanced breast cancer: a case report.

Background: Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor, is used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a complication that can trigger multiple organ failure caused by the release of intracellular nucleic acids, phosphate, and potassium into the blood due to rapid tumor cell disintegration induced by drug therapy. TLS is uncommon in solid tumors and occurs primarily in patients receiving chemotherapy.

Leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein 1 affects bone destruction via IL-6 in mouse periodontitis model.

Objective: To investigate the production of leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein-1 (LRG1) in periodontitis patients and its effectiveness as a new diagnostic marker for periodontitis.

Subjects And Methods: In vitro experiments were conducted to analyze LRG1 mRNA expression in human gingival epithelial cells and fibroblasts via quantitative real-time PCR. In vivo experiments were conducted to analyze LRG1 localization in periodontitis patients.

Comparative Efficacy and Safety of Standard and Biweekly Trifluridine/Tipiracil Regimen in Patients With Colorectal Cancer.

Background/aim: Trifluridine/tipiracil (FTD/TPI) is used to treat metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Since the standard regimen of FTD/TPI features a complex dosing schedule and frequently results in severe hematological toxicities, a simplified regimen has emerged, in which FTD/TPI is orally administered biweekly. However, the survival benefits and potential adverse events associated with the biweekly FTD/TPI regimen have not been fully evaluated in previous reports.

Emergency Resection of a Bleeding Ruptured Malignant Phyllodes Tumor of the Breast.

Ruptured phyllodes tumors, though extremely rare, can necessitate emergency surgery in certain cases, particularly those with active bleeding. A 51-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a newly identified mass in her right breast that developed over the past two months. The tumor had ruptured through the paramammary nipple.

Endovascular management of aortoiliac artery occlusive disease with pseudo-stenosis of the external iliac artery.

In recent years, endovascular treatment has become the first-line revascularisation method for aortoiliac artery occlusive disease. Rarely, aortoiliac artery occlusive disease may be associated with stenosis of the external iliac artery (EIA) that suggested pseudo-stenosis. We describe a case of aortoiliac artery occlusive disease with EIA stenosis without calcification or atheroma.

Keratoameloblastoma (KA) and solid variant of odontogenic keratocyst (SOKC) are rare odontogenic lesions, and their relationship and differences are unclear. The present study described a case that started as an odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and transformed to SOKC/KA upon recurrence. Briefly, a 26‑year‑old man presented with swelling in the right cheek and was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Hiroshima University Hospital (Hiroshima, Japan).

Development and optimization of a triple quadrupole ICP-MS-based system for the quantification of pre-concentrated gaseous elementary mercury.

Understanding the redox reactions and transformation rates of mercury (Hg) species in the environment is important for predicting future gaseous elemental Hg (Hg) levels and assessing the impacts of anthropogenic Hg emissions on human health. Stable Hg isotope tracers are a promising tool for estimating Hg production rates; however, traditional analytical approaches for quantifying Hg, such as atomic fluorescence spectroscopy or atomic absorption spectrometry, cannot differentiate between Hg isotopes, and alternative approaches, such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with a typical aqueous sample introductory system, have relatively higher detection limit of Hg. Here, we developed and evaluated a custom-made thermal desorption unit coupled directly to a triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) for the quantification of Hg pre-concentrated on Au traps.

Use of selective visceral angiography in surgical strategy planning for celiac artery aneurysm in the celiacomesenteric trunk.

Background: The celiacomesenteric trunk (CMT) is a common duct of the celiac artery (CA) and the superior mesenteric artery originating from the aorta, which is an uncommon anatomical variant of visceral artery circulation. Because of the variety of visceral circulation in those with CMT, the visceral circulation associated with each branch should be evaluated prior to surgical treatment of visceral artery aneurysm in the CMT.
