Background/aims: The factors influencing the development of small intestinal obstruction following gastrectomy for early gastric cancer are controversial.
Methodology: Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out using data from 136 patients with early gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy. The mean follow-up interval was 5 years and 11 months.
Background: Hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with liver cirrhosis and severe hypersplenic thrombocytopenia is risky and controversial.
Methods: From 1989 to 2005, 341 patients underwent hepatic resection for HCC in our hospital. Of these, 15 patients were concomitant with severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count,
Background/aims: Laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) is now being performed increasingly in Japan, while laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is still the standard procedure used elsewhere in the world. However, there has been no report on simultaneous operation of LADG and LC. This study aimed to evaluate the combined use of these 2 procedures.

Eight patients were treated with UFT/UZEL therapy as a first-line chemotherapy. UFT(300 mg/m(2)/day) and UZEL (75 mg/body/day) were administered orally for 28 consecutive days followed by a 7-day rest period, and this schedule was repeated every 5 weeks.

Methods: Sixty-three patients with advanced or recurrent gastric cancer were treated with S-1, with or without CDDP, as first-line chemotherapy, and the clinical results were compared retrospectively.
A 66-year-old patient, who had advanced esophageal cancer with lymph node metastasis, was treated by neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy, followed by curative surgery. Chemotherapy of TS-1 (80 mg/m2) was administered orally for 21 days, and weekly intravenous administration of CDDP (20 mg/m2) was done 3 times. Radiotherapy at 2 Gy/day was combined 15 times (total 30 Gy).

We investigated the relationship between intracellular calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) and migration of vascular SMCs in response to platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins.
Methods: Human saphenous vein SMCs were used for all experiments.
Background: The activation of platelets or leukocytes plays an important role in development of intimal hyperplasia. We investigated whether the local blood serotonin and soluble P-selectin levels changed during endovascular therapy of the iliac artery.
Methods: Blood samples were obtained from the iliac artery of 18 lower limbs undergoing percutaneous balloon angioplasty alone (8 limbs, group I) or percutaneous balloon angioplasty and primary stenting (10 limbs, group II).
