We report the case of a 33-year-old woman who was referred to the department of endocrinology and diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). She had been hypertensive from 20 weeks of pregnancy. A 75 g oral glucose tolerance test for screening of GDM at 26 weeks of pregnancy revealed positive results at two points: 183 mg/dL at 60 min, and 193 mg/dL at 90 min.

Painless thyroiditis associated with SARS-CoV-2 and influenza infections in a patient with central hypothyroidism after pituitary surgery.

Summary: We present the case of a 50-year-old Japanese woman who was transferred to our hospital with a 2-day history of fever, sore throat, and malaise. She was diagnosed with acromegaly 9 months ago while being treated for diabetic ketoacidosis, for which she underwent pituitary surgery. She was diagnosed with hypopituitarism postoperatively and was prescribed hydrocortisone and levothyroxine.

Prolonged postoperative hypoaldosteronism related to hyperkalemia in patients with aldosterone-producing adenoma.

Hyperkalemia is developed in a part of patients with aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) after adrenalectomy, suspected to be due to the insufficiency of aldosterone secretion. The purpose of this study is to determine the frequency and characteristics of prolonged postoperative hypoaldosteronism (PPHA) using chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA). We studied 58 patients with APA with long time after adrenalectomy and whose PAC was measured using a CLEIA kit.

A case of Williams syndrome with suspected coexisting ectopic aldosterone-producing tumor in the liver.

Summary: A 31-year-old man with Williams syndrome (WS) was referred to our hospital because of a 9-year history of hypertension, hypokalemia, and high plasma aldosterone concentration to renin activity ratio. A diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) was clinically confirmed but an abdominal CT scan showed no abnormal findings in his adrenal glands. However, a 13-mm hypervascular tumor in the posterosuperior segment of the right hepatic lobe was detected.

Prediction of unilateral hyperaldosteronism on adrenal vein sampling using captopril challenge test in patients with primary aldosteronism.

Captopril challenge test (CCT) is a simple and safe confirmatory test for primary aldosteronism (PA). We investigated the effectiveness of the indices after captopril administration for prediction of unilateral hyperaldosteronism (UHA) on adrenal vein sampling (AVS). We studied 238 patients with PA who had CCT and successful AVS between July 2007 and December 2019 in Sapporo City General Hospital.

We report 3 cases of reduced cardiac function with complications in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients who were treated with rituximab. Patients experienced reduced cardiac functions after the administration of rituximab; there was no evidence of any preceding infusion reactions. Reticulin fiber was observed diffusely in cardiac muscles.

Successful treatment of lymphoma with fludarabine combined with rituximab after immune thrombocytopenia induced by fludarabine.

A 47-year-old man was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) follicular B-cell type (stage IVB). Although partial remission was observed after the administration of several combination chemotherapeutic agents, no more improvement was observed. After we finished the FND (fludarabine, mitoxantrone, dexamethasone) regimen, the patient's status improved.

Effectiveness of propagermanium treatment in multiple myeloma patients.

Interferon (IFN) is one of several drugs effective in treating multiple myeloma (MM), and propagermanium is an IFN inducer. We report on 10 MM patients who were treated with propagermanium at doses from 10 to 40 mg. Two patients achieved complete remission (CR), two patients achieved partial remission (PR), and the condition of four patients was stable (stable disease, SD).

Hepatitis B virus reactivation in a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treated with chemotherapy and rituximab: necessity of prophylaxis for hepatitis B virus reactivation in rituximab therapy.

A patient with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is reported, in which reactivation of the hepatitis B virus was achieved from treatment with rituximab. The patient's HBs antigens were positive on admission, and she tested positive for HBs, HBe, and HBc antibodies, and negative for the HBe antigens. She was treated with a regimen of three courses of rituximab-containing anti-cancer drugs and one course of combined anti-cancer drugs.

Construction of a gamete-enriched gene pool and RNAi-mediated functional analysis in Dictyostelium discoideum.

Macrocysts in Dictyostelium discoideum possess prototypic features of sexual reproduction and are useful for understanding the basic mechanisms of the reproductive process. Here, we randomly analyzed 1,071 gamete cDNAs, and then constructed a gamete-specific subtraction library, FC-IC. Nucleotide sequences of all 903 FC-IC clones were determined and clustered into 272 independent genes.

Myelofibrosis after essential thrombocythemia complicated by alveolar proteinosis.

Hematological diseases are often accompanied by respiratory disorders. Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare disease characterized by excessive accumulation of surfactant in the alveolar space. We describe a case of PAP complicated by myelofibrosis following essential thrombocythemia.

PCR-mediated generation of a gene disruption construct without the use of DNA ligase and plasmid vectors.

We introduce a PCR-based procedure for generating a gene disruption construct. This method depends on DNA fragment fusion by the PCR technique and requires only two steps of PCR to obtain a sufficient amount of the gene disruption construct for one transformation experiment. The first step involves three separate PCR syntheses of a selectable marker cassette and the 5'- and 3'-regions of a target gene.
