Climate oscillations in the Quaternary forced species to major latitudinal or altitudinal range shifts. It has been suggested that adaptation concomitant with range shifts plays key roles in species responses during climate oscillations, but the role of selection for local adaptation to climatic changes remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated population structure, demographic history and signatures of climate-driven selection based on genome-wide polymorphism data of 141 Japanese Arabidopsis halleri individuals, with European ones as outgroups.

Article Synopsis
  • Adaptive divergence can occur between populations even if they are not fully isolated, especially when their environments differ significantly.
  • Individuals in intermediate zones between these populations show mixed genetics due to gene flow, but selective pressures can limit this flow and maintain divergence.
  • In studying Arabidopsis halleri along an altitude gradient in Mt. Ibuki, we identified genetic regions influenced by selection, suggesting that this selection helps maintain adaptive differences between highland and lowland plants.

The processes by which animals become genetically isolated in an open environment such as the ocean have not yet been fully elucidated. Morphologically different populations of Pacific white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus obliquidens are observed sympatrically in the Sea of Japan. However, genetic studies that exclusively used limited mitochondrial loci or microsatellite DNA have failed to demonstrate the existence of genetically distinct populations.

Wild plants with a wide distribution, including those exposed to a wide variety of environmental conditions, may have variations in key functional traits relevant for agricultural applications. The East Asian wild radish ( var. ) is an appropriate model plant because it is widely distributed and has outstanding sink capacity as well as two cultivars within the species.

In mountainous areas, plant distribution is constrained by various environmental stresses. Plasticity and constancy in plant functional traits may relate to optimal strategies at respective habitats and to ecotypic differentiation along elevation. Although plant biomass allocation has been extensively studied in relation to adaptation to soil nutrient availability along elevation, its optimality is still poorly understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Lineage-specific gene duplications play a significant role in the phenotypic differences observed in closely related species, but the exact rates of these duplications and the selective pressures following them remain ambiguous.
  • Using Illumina DNA sequencing of Arabidopsis halleri, researchers established gene groups across Brassicaceae and found that the frequency of gene duplication in the Arabidopsis lineage is about 10 times higher than previously estimated through comparative genomics, likely due to a quick decay of older duplicate genes.
  • Analyses of selection pressures on genes duplicated within the A. halleri-lyrata lineage revealed that duplicated genes experienced more positive selection than non-duplicated genes, and the functional divergence of these duplicates accelerated several million years post-dup

Adaptive divergence at the microgeographic scale has been generally disregarded because high gene flow is expected to disrupt local adaptation. Yet, growing number of studies reporting adaptive divergence at a small spatial scale highlight the importance of this process in evolutionary biology. To investigate the genetic basis of microgeographic local adaptation, we conducted a genome-wide scan among sets of continuously distributed populations of Arabidopsis halleri subsp.

Pollinators deposit pollen grains on stigmas and remove pollen grains from anthers. The mechanics of these transfers can now be quantified with the use of high-speed video. We videoed hawkmoths, carpenter bees, and swallowtail butterflies pollinating Clerodendrum trichotomum.

In a number of previous studies investigators have reported the effect of the thyroid status on the changes of the serum lipoprotein concentrations, whereas reports on serum Lp(a) concentrations have been limited and the results are controversial. Recently, we encountered a hypothyroid patient with elevated serum Lp(a) concentrations in whom serial measurements of serum Lp(a) concentration were performed during the hormone replacement therapy. Our observation on this patient is of particular interest: the serum Lp(a) concentrations tended to continue to decrease even after 1 year 5 months, suggesting that the effects of thyroid hormone on the serum Lp(a) levels may continue for much longer than those on the serum LDL-C.

Vascular plants appeared ~410 million years ago, then diverged into several lineages of which only two survive: the euphyllophytes (ferns and seed plants) and the lycophytes. We report here the genome sequence of the lycophyte Selaginella moellendorffii (Selaginella), the first nonseed vascular plant genome reported. By comparing gene content in evolutionarily diverse taxa, we found that the transition from a gametophyte- to a sporophyte-dominated life cycle required far fewer new genes than the transition from a nonseed vascular to a flowering plant, whereas secondary metabolic genes expanded extensively and in parallel in the lycophyte and angiosperm lineages.

We reviewed the medical records of 123 adult reduced-intensity cord blood transplantation (RI-CBT) recipients to investigate the clinical features of graft failure after RI-CBT. Nine (7.3%) had graft failure, and were classified as graft rejection rather than primary graft failure; they showed peripheral cytopenia with complete loss of donor-type haematopoiesis, implying destruction of donor cells by immunological mechanisms rather than poor graft function.

To investigate clinical characteristics of early central nervous system (CNS) complications after reduced-intensity stem cell transplantation (RIST), we reviewed the medical records of 232 patients who had undergone RIST for hematologic diseases at our institutions between September 1999 and June 2003. All patients had received purine analog-based preparative regimens. Stem cell sources comprised granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized blood from HLA-identical or 1 locus-mismatched related donors (n = 151), unrelated bone marrow (n = 44), or unrelated cord blood (n = 37).

Background And Objective: Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVL) has been treated as fever of unknown origin (FUO), and many patients have been treated inadequately based on incorrect diagnoses. We previously cares for a patient with IVL who tested positive for prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), a marker of prostate cancer. Since then, we have regularly examined this mather when IVL was suspected to investigate the usefulness of PAP as a diagnostic marker for IVL.

We examined the consequences of differences in flowering date on seed production in the self-compatible herb Heloniopsis orientalis. The number of selfed seeds per fruit, as determined by microsatellite markers, did not depend on when the plant flowered, whereas the number of outcrossed seeds per fruit increased with later flowering dates. Consequently, the selfing rate decreased with later flowering dates.
