Background: Anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas is a rare pancreatic neoplasm with a poor prognosis. It is classified as a variant of ductal adenocarcinoma, but the clinical features and treatment of it remain unknown because of its rarity and aggressiveness. Endoscopic ultrasonography and endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration are useful techniques for the diagnosis of pancreatic tumors with high sensitivity and specificity.

A 70-year-old man with distal bile duct carcinoma underwent a subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy without adjuvant chemotherapy. One and a half years after the surgery, elevated levels of serum SPan-1(38.1 U/mL)were observed and CT scans demonstrated a solitary metastasis, 25mm in size, in segment 8 of the liver.

We report a case of duodenal neuroendocrine tumor(NET)G1 resected by laparoscopic-endoscopic cooperative surgery (LECS). A 78-year-old woman underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, revealing an 8 mm, rising tumor on the anterior wall of the duodenal bulb. The tumor was pathologically diagnosed as a G1 duodenal NET, by biopsy.

Background: Transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) is a Mg/Ca-permeable channel with kinase activity and is expressed in many solid tumor types. However, it has not been evaluated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of TRPM7 in ESCC and to determine the role of TRPM7 in proliferation, migration and invasion of ESCC.

Background: Although recent studies described important roles for carbonic anhydrase (CA) XII in epithelial carcinogenesis and tumor behavior, a consensus has not yet been reached regarding its clinicopathological significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In the present study, we investigated its prognostic significance in ESCC.

Materials And Methods: An immunohistochemical analysis was performed on 70 primary tumor samples obtained from ESCC patients who underwent esophagectomy, and the relationships between the expression of CA XII and various clinicopathological features or prognosis were analyzed.

Background: We studied cases with single lymph node metastasis from thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Methods: We reviewed the site of nodal metastasis in 73 cases with a single metastatic site.

Results: The lymph node metastases of the upper thoracic cases were located in the cervical, superior mediastinal, middle mediastinal, lower mediastinal, and abdominal lymph nodes in 5, 10, 3, 0, and 0 cases, respectively.

Aim: To investigate the role of claudin 1 in the regulation of genes involved in cell migration and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-induced gene expression in human gastric adenocarcinoma cells.

Methods: Knockdown experiments were conducted with claudin 1 small interfering RNA (siRNA), and the effects on the cell cycle, apoptosis, migration and invasion were analyzed in human gastric adenocarcinoma MKN28 cells. The gene expression profiles of cells were analyzed by microarray and bioinformatics.

The role of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family members in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced apoptosis of human gastric cancer MKN28 cells was explored. TNF-α induced up-regulation of cIAP2, whereas cycloheximide (CHX) induced down-regulation of XIAP and survivin. Degradation of cIAP1 and XIAP, but not survivin, was accelerated by co-treatment of cells with TNF-α and CHX, and TNF-α-induced up-regulation of cIAP2 was inhibited by BMS-345541 (NF-κB inhibitor).

The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of a hypotonic treatment for peritoneal dissemination from gastric cancer cells using an in vivo model. We firstly evaluated the toxicity of a peritoneal injection of distilled water (DW) (2 mL for 3 days) in mice. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations revealed that the peritoneal injection of DW did not severely damage the abdominal organs of these mice.

Background: E2F Transcription Factor 5 Protein (E2F5) is considered to act primarily as a transcriptional repressor in the cell cycle. However, its expression and role in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have not been investigated. We examined whether the expression of E2F5 is related to the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients with ESCC.

Background: Although p21 is an important component that regulates cell-cycle progression, no consensus has been reached about its clinicopathological significance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In the present study, we investigated its prognostic significance and correlation with cyclin-D1 (CCND1) expression in ESCC.

Materials And Methods: The p21 labeling index (LI) was calculated by immunohistochemistry for 69 primary tumor samples obtained from patients with ESCC who had undergone curative esophagectomy, and correlations between p21 LI and various clinicopathological features, prognosis, and CCND1 LI were studied.

Background: xCT is a component of the cysteine/glutamate transporter, which plays a key role in glutathione synthesis. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the role of xCT in the regulation of genes involved in cell cycle progression and the clinicopathological significance of its expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

Methods: xCT expression in human ESCC cell lines was analyzed by Western blotting and immunofluorescent staining.

Background: The immunohistochemical staining of phospho-histone H3 (PHH3) has recently been reported to predict the prognosis of different tumors. However, it has not been evaluated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of PHH3 in ESCC.

Background: Adaptor proteins, with multimodular structures, can participate in the regulation of various cellular functions. A novel adaptor protein XB130 has been implicated as a substrate and regulator of tyrosine kinase-mediated signaling and in controlling cell proliferation and apoptosis in thyroid and lung cancer cells. However, its expression and role in gastrointestinal cancer have not been investigated.

To elucidate the mechanisms underlying adriamycin resistance, adriamycin resistance-related genes were explored using the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a useful eukaryotic model. The CLN1 and CLN2 genes, encoding G1 cyclin, and the ERG13 gene, encoding 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) synthase, were identified.

We report a case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that caused a severe arterioportal shunt (APS). A 49-year-old man was admitted to hospital due to esophagogastric variceal hemorrhage and HCC, and underwent endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) and endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS). He was then referred to our hospital.

A natural compound contained in olive oil, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethanol (DOPE), is also known as an endogenous metabolite of dopamine. The role of DOPE in oxidative stress-induced cell damage was investigated using differentiated PC12 cells. Superoxide (O(2)(-)) and H(2)O(2) induced a dose-dependent leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and decreased cell viability denoted by MTT assay.
