Addiction is known to occur through the consumption of substances such as pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, food, alcohol and tobacco. These addictions can be viewed as drug addiction, resulting from the ingestion of chemical substances contained in them. Multiple neural networks, including the reward system, anti-reward/stress system and central immune system in the brain, are believed to be involved in the onset of drug addiction.

The genetic associations of TREM2 loss-of-function variants with Alzheimer disease (AD) indicate the protective roles of microglia in AD pathogenesis. Functional deficiencies of TREM2 disrupt microglial clustering around amyloid β (Aβ) plaques, impair their transcriptional response to Aβ, and worsen neuritic dystrophy. However, the molecular mechanism underlying these phenotypes remains unclear.

We propose an omnidirectional measurement method without blind spots by using a convex mirror, which in principle does not cause chromatic aberration, and by using vertical disparity by installing cameras at the top and bottom of the image. In recent years, there has been significant research in the fields of autonomous cars and robots. In these fields, three-dimensional measurements of the surrounding environment have become indispensable.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the effects of Low-energy shock wave therapy (LESW) on ischemic-induced overactive bladder in rats, comparing three groups: those with arterial injury, those with arterial injury treated with LESW, and a control group.
  • - Results showed that rats in the arterial injury group had significantly shorter voiding intervals and reduced bladder blood flow than controls, while those treated with LESW showed substantial improvements in both metrics.
  • - Molecular analysis indicated that LESW treatment led to increased expression of certain genes and proteins involved in bladder function, as well as higher levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), suggesting that LESW may help restore bladder function through these mechanisms.

A forward mutagenesis assay using the gene has been widely employed for the last several decades in studies addressing mutation frequencies and mutation spectra associated with various intrinsic and environmental mutagens. In this study, by using a shuttle vector and non-SOS-induced with short-read next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, we present an advanced method for the study of mutations, which is simple, versatile, and cost-effective. We demonstrate the performance of our newly developed assay via pilot experiments with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, the results from which emerge more relevant than expected.

Antibiotic-associated encephalopathy (AAE) is a central nervous system disorder caused by antibiotics administration and classified into three types based on clinical symptoms. Type 1 AAE causes seizures and myoclonus, type 2 causes psychiatric symptoms, and type 3 is characterized by cerebellar ataxia. In this study, we investigated whether the electrical activity of in vitro human iPSC-derived neurons to antibiotics could be classified based on the 3 types of AAEs classified by clinical symptoms.

  • In women with chronic pelvic pain, conditions like interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and endometriosis often occur together, potentially due to cross-sensitization involving specific receptors (TRPV1 and TRPA1).
  • This study involved surgically inducing endometriosis in female rats and analyzing bladder function and receptor expression to understand bladder hypersensitivity.
  • Results indicated that endometriosis correlated with increased TRPA1 expression and bladder hypersensitivity, while treatment with a GnRH analog reduced these effects.

  • Understanding the effects of climate change on migratory fish species is vital, but limited long-term data on their population dynamics makes management challenging.
  • This study used high-resolution stable oxygen isotope analysis on otoliths of Pacific bluefin tuna to determine the origin of individual fish, revealing significant variations in thermal environments experienced during their larval stage.
  • The findings indicated that fish from different spawning grounds (Sea of Japan and Nansei Islands) had distinct thermal histories, with slightly biased absolute temperature estimates, yet aligning well with known spawning temperatures.

This study aimed to explore effective measurement angles for pelvic incidence (PI) classification and to develop a quick, noninvasive assessment tool for PI classification. We defined five variation types of hip-knee line (HKL) angles and tested the discrimination ability of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis using 125 photographs of upright standing posture from the right lateral side. ROC analysis revealed an applicable HKL angle defined by the line connecting the most raised part of the buttock and the central point of the knee and the midthigh line.

Bladder tamponade due to hemorrhagic cystitis caused by BK virus in immunocompetent patients is familiar to urologists. BK virus is an important cause of nephropathy and graft loss in kidney transplant recipients. Although urothelial carcinoma of the bladder in kidney transplant recipients with persistent BK viruria is known, BK virus-associated urothelial carcinoma (BKVUC) in peripheral blood stem cell transplantation recipients is not as well known.

Article Synopsis
  • The spawning grounds of Japanese eels are near the West Mariana Ridge, and the eels travel through ocean currents, specifically the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and Kuroshio Current (KC), to reach East Asia.
  • El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events significantly impact the movement of the NEC bifurcation and salinity profiles, affecting larval entry success into the KC.
  • During El Niño years, changes in salinity front and NEC bifurcation can slow down larval migration, extend the time to reach the KC, increase eel size upon reaching estuarine areas, and potentially reduce the rate of larvae entering the KC.
