The effects of polishing, cooking, and storing on total arsenic (As) and As species concentrations in rice were studied adopting typical Japanese conditions. Total and inorganic As levels in three white rice samples polished by removing 10% of bran by weight were reduced to 61-66% and 51-70% of those in brown rice. The As levels in the white rice after three washings with deionized water were reduced to 81-84% and 71-83% of those in raw rice.

To support skill upgrading in analysis of inorganic constituents of environmental and food samples, the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) and the National Food Research Institute (NFRI) have organized a proficiency test (PT) of determination of Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, and Cd in brown-rice flour based on the international standard (ISO/IEC 17043:2010). One hundred and thirty-three sets of reports were assessed by use of the E(n)-number and z-score approaches in accordance with ISO/IEC 17043 and the international harmonized protocol for PT. The PT results and analytical procedures, reported in detail, were reviewed, and possible technical reasons for questionable or unsatisfactory results are discussed.

Background: Cadmium (Cd) translocation and accumulation in the grain and aerial plant parts of rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important aspect of food safety and phytoextraction in areas with contaminated soil. To simplify the detection of infectious human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), we generated a cell line that produced luciferase in a dose-dependent manner upon HCMV infection. Using this cell line, we identified anti-HCMV compounds from a diverse library of 9,600 compounds. One of them, 1-(3,5-dichloro-4-pyridyl)piperidine-4-carboxamide (DPPC), was effective against HCMV (Towne strain) infection of human lung fibroblast cells at a 50% effective concentration of 2.

Milled rice and bran were prepared from brown rice (Oryza sativa japonica) using a commercial scale rice-mill to investigate the changes in cadmium (Cd) content caused by the milling process. The authors designed microcomputer simulation models to investigate the combined effect of a distorted grayscale ultrasound image and an inaccurately measured Doppler angle on the accuracy of measurement of blood-flow velocity in vessels located behind mass lesions in the liver. Error decreased when flow was measured at the midpoint of the posttumoral segment of the vessel and increased with distance between the mass and the vessel, with inclination of the vessel, and with decrease in the diameter of the mass. Error was least with the sector probe, intermediate with the convex probe, and greatest with the linear probe.

We have previously shown that uncharacterized glycoprotein VI (GPVI), which is constitutively associated and coexpressed with Fc receptor gamma chain (FcRgamma) in human platelets, is essential for collagen-stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation of FcRgamma, Syk, and phospholipase Cgamma2 (PLCgamma2), leading to platelet activation. Here we investigated involvement of the Src family in the proximal signals through the GPVI-FcRgamma complex, using the snake venom convulxin from Crotalus durissus terrificus, which specifically recognizes GPVI and activates platelets through cross-linking GPVI. Convulxin-coupled beads precipitated the GPVI-FcRgamma complex from platelet lysates.

To study a role of leukotrienes (LTs) in bronchial asthma, we measured LTC4 and LTD4 in plasma of 16 asthmatics during wheezing attack and of 4 normal subjects. Plasma of arterial blood was processed by extraction using the SEP-PAK, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Fractions from HPLC with elution times which corresponded to synthetic LTC4 and LTD4 were used for quantification of LTs by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and bioassay.
