Abnormality of the circulatory reflexes has been reported in patients with primary aldosteronism. However, changes in blood pressure, heart rate, plasma renin activity (PRA), and plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) after head-up tilting in primary aldosteronism have not yet been reported. Seven patients with primary aldosteronism were tilted to a 65 degree head-up position which was maintained for 30 min.

Perineurial cell tumor and the significance of the perineurial cells in neurofibroma.

The authors attempted to clarify the exact cell components of neurofibroma by immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies. Materials were randomly selected, 40 cases of neurilemoma and neurofibroma (-tosis) in addition to 2 cases of tumors composed exclusively of perineurial cells and three cases of normal peripheral nerve. The applied markers included antisera of S-100 protein for Schwann cells, blood coagulation factor XIIIa for endoneurial fibroblasts or perineurial cells, and laminin and collagen type IV for the basement membrane.

Biochemical similarity of expressed human prorenin and native inactive renin.

Prorenin is secreted by mammalian cells transfected with a human preprorenin expression construct. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the physicochemical properties of expressed prorenin in culture medium with the known characteristics of human inactive renin, which accounts for nearly half the renin in plasma and kidney. We found that expressed human prorenin strongly resembles human renal and plasma inactive renin.

Twenty-two patients with cirrhosis and minute hepatocellular carcinoma less than 3 cm in diameter were followed for periods of 6-37 mo without specific treatment. The survival curve drawn by the Kaplan-Meier method showed a 1-yr survival of 90.7%, a 2-yr survival of 55.

Incidence of portal vein thrombosis in liver cirrhosis. An angiographic study in 708 patients.

Portal vein thrombosis was thought to be a common complication of liver cirrhosis in the past. The incidence of angiographically demonstrable portal vein thrombosis was studied in 708 consecutive patients with unequivocal cirrhosis seen in the past 10 yr in whom either transhepatic portography or superior mesenteric arterial portography clearly delineated the major portal vein system. Excluding 2 cases that were thought to be associated with past splenectomy, there were 4 cases of portal vein thrombosis related to cirrhosis, all in a decompensated stage.

Twelve cartilaginous tumors were studied by electron microscopy and the presence of S-100 protein was studied immunohistochemically in order to clarify the cell origin of chondroblastoma, chondromyxoid fibroma, and mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. Three chondroblastomas were characterized by round or ovoid tumor cells with some cytoplasmic processes, well-developed organelles and thick fibrous laminae in the nuclear membrane, occasional multinucleated giant cells and scanty chondroid matrix. S-100 protein was demonstrated in the tumor cells and some multinucleated giant cells Two chondromyxoid fibromas revealed tumor cells of varied shapes with characteristic cartilaginous differentiation and abundant chondroid matrix.

Diagnosis and clinical features of small hepatocellular carcinoma with emphasis on the utility of real-time ultrasonography. A study in 51 patients.

The clinical features and usefulness of various methods for diagnosis of small hepatocellular carcinoma, no greater than 5 cm in diameter, were studied in 51 patients. The diagnosis was verified in 28 patients by hepatic resection and in 4 patients at autopsy. The tumor was less than 3 cm in diameter in 23 patients.

Chondromyxoid fibroma of bone. An electron microscopic observation.

A resected case of chondromyxoid fibroma of the right fibula in a 31-year-old male is presented. The histology was composed of characteristic lobular features of this tumor with abundant cartilaginous matrix. The ultrastructural study exhibited stellate, ovoid or elongated tumor cells with features of cartilage cells and abundant loose matrix with many fine filamentous structures.
