Linezolid is an effective antibiotic for treatment of infections caused by resistant Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, thrombocytopenia has been reported in a certain proportion of patients receiving linezolid treatment. We investigated the risk factors for linezolid-related thrombocytopenia in MRSA-infected patients after digestive surgery.

Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) of the pancreas occur mostly in females and are potentially sex hormone-sensitive. However, a MCN occurring during pregnancy is quite rare. A 30-year-old woman in the tenth week of pregnancy was referred to us because of a rapid increase in left hypochondrial distending pain.

Watery diarrhea, hypokalemia and achlorhydria (WDHA) syndrome caused by vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) -producing tumor only rarely occurs in patients with nonpancreatic disease. A 49-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a right adrenal tumor incidentally diagnosed by abdominal ultrasound during the investigation of chronic watery diarrhea. Laboratory findings showed hypokalemia and excessive production of VIP and catecholamines.

Herein is presented the case of a malignant non-functioning endocrine tumor of the pancreas with oncocytic features, and a discussion on the high incidence of malignancy in oncocytic endocrine pancreatic tumors. The patient was a 65-year-old woman who showed no paraneoplastic symptoms produced by functioning pancreatic endocrine tumors. The primary tumor was located in the body and tail of the pancreas, and had metastasized to the liver.

Background: Hemoperfusion with PMX-F (polymyxin B covalently immobilized on fibers) has been reported to be safe and effective for patients with septic shock. However, the molecular mechanism of this usefulness is not yet clear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the expression of CD14, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR on monocytes, and the expression of CD16, CD11b/CD18 on neutrophils, are altered in septic patients according to the severity, and whether PMX-F treatment affects the clinical parameters and the expression of leukocyte surface antigen expression.

Although several studies have reported that splenectomy increases susceptibility to bacterial infections, other reports have indicated that splenectomy does not induce such susceptibility. To clarify this discrepancy, we studied the effects of splenectomy in the models of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or Escherichia coli challenge and intestinal obstruction, focusing on cytokine production and bacterial clearance in the liver. Using C57BL/6 mice at 4 weeks after splenectomy or a sham operation, either LPS or E.

Background/aims: Immunosuppressive acidic protein (IAP) is an acute-phase reactant which has a close correlation with the impairment of the host's immunity. The present study aims to investigate the significance of serum IAP as an index of cytokine-related disease status in gastric cancer patients.

Methods: Serum IAP levels were determined in 76 gastric cancer patients and 20 healthy subjects.

Background: Interleukin (IL)-18 is a novel cytokine that has recently been characterized as an inducer of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of peritoneal IL-18 concentrations in patients with peritonitis.

Methods: We measured IL-18, IFN-gamma, and IL-10 concentrations in the peritoneal fluid of 28 patients undergoing laparotomy for peritonitis.

Background: The present study aimed to clarify the predisposing factors for postoperative infectious complications after less invasive surgery.

Methods: A total 150 surgical patients were placed in either group H (operative blood loss > or = 500 mL) or group L (<500 mL). The patients' background factors and postoperative inflammatory responses were assessed.

A 60-year-old man, who suffered from advanced rectal cancer accompanied with liver metastasis, underwent an abdominoperineal resection and a partial hepatectomy. He remained well until 4 months after surgery when he developed a biopsy-proven recurrent intrapelvic mass and multiple liver tumors. At 6 months after surgery, the metastatic liver tumors grew larger and almost completely occupied both lobes of the liver.
