The study examined the connection between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and epilepsy in children and adolescents using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database from 1997 to 2008.
In two cohorts, researchers calculated the incidence and risk of developing epilepsy in patients with ASD and vice versa, finding a significant association between the two conditions.
Results showed a bidirectional relationship, suggesting that both ASD and epilepsy may share underlying risk factors, but further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms involved.
