Article Synopsis
  • Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a technique in dental procedures used to enhance bone volume for implants, but current membranes have limitations like quick absorption and poor space maintenance.
  • In a study using male Fisher rats, researchers compared a new resorbable bilayer membrane made of poly (L-lactic acid) and poly (-caprolactone) (PLACL) with traditional collagen membranes, finding that both promoted significant bone regeneration.
  • The PLACL membrane showed notable durability and partial degradation after 24 weeks, suggesting it could be a better option for GBR, though more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety in humans.

Article Synopsis
  • Predicting tooth loss remains a significant challenge, but machine learning offers promising computational solutions to improve clinical outcomes in dentistry.
  • The study evaluated bias in prognostic prediction models for tooth loss using machine learning, focusing on accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) metrics from selected literature.
  • Five studies showed high accuracy in predictions, but there was a notable risk of bias, highlighting that incorporating patient-level and socioeconomic data alongside clinical predictors may improve future prognostication models.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition that causes the destruction of the supporting tissues of teeth and is a major public health problem affecting more than half of the adult population worldwide. Recently, members of the herpes virus family, such as the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), have been suggested to be involved in the etiology of periodontitis because bacterial activity alone does not adequately explain the clinical characteristics of periodontitis. However, the role of EBV in the etiology of periodontitis is unknown.
