Lipid profiling in nine bacterial species has been accomplished by laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) using amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film with 100 nm thickness. Lipid ions could be generated by LDI on a-Si regardless of ion acquisition modes because of a thermal property of a-Si to govern laser-induced surface heating. In a comparative study of lipid profiling in Bacillus lichemiformis by LDI-MS and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), LDI-MS on a-Si shows a higher efficiency in lipid and lipopeptide detection than MALDI-MS.

Heightened attentional bias to emotional information is one of the main characteristics of disorders related to emotion dysregulation such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. Although reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy, is known to effectively modulate subjective experience of emotions, it remains unknown whether reappraisal can alter attentional biases to emotional information. In the current research, we investigated the influence of instruction-induced state reappraisal (Study 1) and trait reappraisal (Study 2) on attentional biases to happy and angry faces.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how skin pressure impacts the accuracy of needle entry points during lumbar epidural injections guided by fluoroscopy.
  • In a trial with 64 patients, those in the pressing group had more needle reposition attempts and longer procedure times compared to the nonpressing group.
  • Results indicate that pressing on the skin with a radiopaque indicator leads to increased fluoroscopy exposure, suggesting that practitioners should avoid this method to enhance accuracy and reduce radiation risk.

The genetic association of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism with methotrexate (MTX)-associated toxicity has been evaluated and conflicting results have been reported. The substantial heterogeneity of the studied population was suggested to be a possible explanation because ethnicity, MTX dose, coadministered chemotherapeutic agents, and folinate rescue dosage regimen could alter the MTX toxicity profile. The patient population was homogenized by limiting the cancer type to primary central nervous system lymphoma and chemotherapy protocol to a high-dose MTX monotherapy regimen.

Introduction: Chemo-responsiveness in pancreatic cancer is known to be dependent on fibrosis and vascularity. The purpose of this study was to assess vascular enhancement in advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma with or without liver metastasis in computed tomography (CT) and to analyze the correlation between enhancement patterns and chemo-responsiveness.

Methods: Patients were assigned to either a responder group (partial response or stable disease) or a non-responder group (progressive disease) according to chemo-responsiveness assessed by CT before and after gemcitabine-based chemotherapy.

Sulfur mustard (SM) is an alkylating agent, which has been used as in chemical warfare in a number of conflicts. As the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and adducts in DNA and proteins have been suggested as the mechanism underlying SM‑induced cytotoxicity, the present study screened several antioxidant candidates, including tannic acid, deferoxamine mesylate, trolox, vitamin C, ellagic acid and caffeic acid (CA) to assess their potential as therapeutic agents for SM‑induced cell death. Among several antioxidants, CA partially alleviated SM‑induced cell death in a dose‑dependent manner.
