Purpose: The aim of this study was to quantify the amount of brain damage suffered by patients who underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) in which S-100β protein and neuron-specific enolase were used.

Methods: Thirty-four patients undergoing scheduled OPCAB were enrolled in the study. The patients were divided into two groups according to the results of their magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and cervical ultrasonography: 13 patients had cervical or intracranial arterial stenosis (Group A), and 21 patients did not (Group B).

Research Design And Methods: Islet cell expression of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), cytoplasmic retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-like receptors, downstream innate immune markers, adaptive immune mediators, and apoptotic markers was studied in three autopsied pancreata obtained 2 to 5 days after onset of fulminant type 1 diabetes.

Results: RIG-I was strongly expressed in β-cells in all three pancreata infected with enterovirus.

Cerebral air embolism (CAE) is a rare neurologic complication that can occur in patients undergoing various medical procedures or trauma. CAE can sometimes result in death caused by severe brain edema. In spite of these implications, the pathophysiologic mechanisms and radiologic features of fatal CAE remain to be elucidated.

In this study, the entrance surface dose rates received by a phantom during cineangiography and fluoroscopy were compared. The X-ray conditions used in the measurements were those normally used in facilities performing percutaneous coronary intervention. Although, today, the entrance surface doses (cineangiography and fluoroscopy) of X-ray equipment used for cardiac interventional radiology (IVR) tends to be lower than they were previously, some equipment produces a high radiation dose.

Background/aims: Many reports of laparoscopic colorectal surgery (LCS) for advanced cancer have been published indicating that LCS is an optimal and less invasive surgical treatment. This study analyzed the short- and long-term outcomes after LCS in patients with T1 cancer.

We performed methylation specific PCR analysis on the RIZ1 promoter in MDS and AML. Methylation was detected in 17 of 34 MDS (50%) and 22 of 72 AML (31%) (p=0.053).

A case of cerebral embolism with metastatic chondrosarcoma in the left atrium.

Cardiac tumor is a rare, but clinically important source of cerebral embolism. We report a case of metastatic chondrosarcoma in the left atrium with multiple cerebral emboli. A computed tomography scan of the chest revealed a large mass in the left atrium and pulmonary vein.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Yokukansan, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, for treating behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with Parkinson disease (PD; n=7) and those with PD with dementia (PDD; n=7).

Background: BPSD are often seen in patients with senile dementia and have serious deleterious effects on the lives of patients and caregivers. Recent studies indicate that the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Yokukansan may be safe and beneficial for the treatment of BPSD patients.

Diabetes associated with autoimmune pancreatitis: new insights into the mechanism of β-cell dysfunction.

In this study, we used a chronic cerebral hypoperfusion rat model to show that the regeneration of white matter damaged by hypoperfusion is enhanced by inhibiting phosphodiesterase III. A rat model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion was prepared by bilateral common carotid artery ligation.
