Background: Pyogenic spondylitis or intervertebral discitis rarely spreads into the thoracic cavity, resulting in pyothorax. Moreover, no study has reported methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as a cause. Conservative and surgical treatments are reportedly effective for the above-mentioned situations; however, there have been no comprehensive reports owing to the disease's rarity.

This study aimed to characterize the intracapsular environment of freshly laid eggs of the oviparous catshark (Scyliorhinus torazame) by investigating the microbial abundance and microbiota to understand its potential contribution to embryonic defence. The egg capsule of oviparous elasmobranchs is tightly sealed until pre-hatching, after which seawater flows into the capsule, exposing the embryos to the surrounding seawater.

Treating Extensive Spontaneous Osteonecrosis of the Tibia by the Medial Opening Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy Procedure: A Case Report.

Osteonecrosis of the tibia is less common than that of the femoral condyle, with no consensus on surgical indications. In this study, a medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) was performed to treat the very extensive osteonecrosis of the tibia. This case demonstrates significant symptomatic relief and functional improvement following OWHTO for spontaneous tibial plateau osteonecrosis.

Lymphoid follicular hyperplasia (LFH) is a benign lymphoproliferative disease. Although it can occur within the thoracic cavity, LFH originating from the chest wall has not been reported. A 79-year-old woman was incidentally found to have a well-defined mass on the left posterior chest wall during a preoperative examination for aortic valve replacement.

Sleep Disturbance Caused by Step Changes in Railway Noise Exposure and Earthquakes.

Kyushu Shinkansen and conventional railway lines run parallel in the areas 5 km north of Kumamoto Station (northern area) and 12 km south of the station (southern area). Following the operation of the Kyushu Shinkansen Line in 2011, the adjacent conventional railway line in the north was elevated, a new station was operated in the south, and large earthquakes struck the Kumamoto area from March to April 2016. Sleep disturbances were compared before and after the interventions and earthquakes based on noise source (Shinkansen and conventional railways), area (northern and southern), and house type (detached and apartment) through socio-acoustic surveys from 2011 to 2017.

Background: The usefulness of autologous blood pleurodesis for air leak after pulmonary resection is well known; however, factors predicting the therapeutic efficacy are poorly understood. Herein, we aimed to examine the predictors of early autologous blood pleurodesis for air leak following pulmonary resection.

Methods: Patients who underwent pulmonary resection and autologous blood pleurodesis with thrombin for postoperative air leak between January 2016 and October 2022 were retrospectively analyzed.

Functional characterization of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone receptors in cloudy catshark, Scyliorhinus torazame.

The follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) and luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) in cloudy catshark were cloned, and recombinant FSHR and LHR were expressed for characterization. Ventral lobe extract (VLE) from the pituitary contains homologous FSH and LH, and it stimulated the cAMP signaling of FSHR and LHR dose-dependently. Two transcript variants of LHR (LHR-L with exon 10 and LHR-S without) were identified, and LHR-S was the dominant form with higher basal cAMP activity without VLE stimulation.

Ventricular Thrombus Formation Caused by Subendomyocardial Inflammation in Eosinophilic Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis.

Cardiac involvement of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a rare but life-threatening complication. We present a case of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis with moderately impaired ventricular function forming a ventricular thrombus. Pathological assessment of endomyocardial biopsy specimen revealed aggregated eosinophils in the subendocardium, suggesting ventricular endothelial damage leading to thrombus formation.

A 67-year-old woman with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis was not vaccinated against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and was on multiple immunosuppressive drugs. She was hospitalized because of interstitial shadowing in the lungs and diagnosed with persistent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Despite treatment with a recombinant monoclonal antibody and antivirals, her symptoms persisted and she lacked a specific antibody response.

Efficacy and safety of add-on mirogabalin to conventional therapy for the treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain after thoracic surgery: the multicenter, randomized, open-label ADMIT-NeP study.

Background: For chronic pain after thoracic surgery, optimal timing of its diagnosis and effective treatment remains unresolved, although several treatment options are currently available. We examined the efficacy and safety of mirogabalin, in combination with conventional pain therapy (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and/or acetaminophen), for treating peripheral neuropathic pain (NeP) after thoracic surgery.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel-group study, patients with peripheral NeP were randomly assigned 1:1 to mirogabalin as add-on to conventional therapy or conventional treatment alone.

Vancomycin Hydrochloride as a Risk Factor for Acute Kidney Injury: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by vancomycin hydrochloride (VCM) was reported to be 5-43%. VCM-induced AKI was reported to be more likely to occur 4-17 days after initiating VCM treatment; however, it may occur earlier. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate risk factors for the development of AKI within two (AKI2days) and seven (AKI7days) days of VCM administration.

This study aimed to determine whether obesity and disease outcomes are associated in patients with critically-ill coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). This retrospective observational study using Japanese multicenter registry data included COVID-19 patients who required IMV and were discharged between January and September 2020. The patients were divided into the obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 25 kg/m) and nonobese (BMI < 25 kg/m) groups.

In the present study, we examined the in vivo effects of P4 administration in mature female cloudy catsharks.
