Prospects for observing and localizing gravitational-wave transients with Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA.

We present our current best estimate of the plausible observing scenarios for the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-wave detectors over the next several years, with the intention of providing information to facilitate planning for multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. We estimate the sensitivity of the network to transient gravitational-wave signals for the third (O3), fourth (O4) and fifth observing (O5) runs, including the planned upgrades of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. We study the capability of the network to determine the sky location of the source for gravitational-wave signals from the inspiral of binary systems of compact objects, that is binary neutron star, neutron star-black hole, and binary black hole systems.

The mechanisms whereby leaf anlagen undergo proliferative growth and expansion to form wide, flat leaves are unclear. The maize gene () is a () homolog expressed at the margins of leaf primordia, and is required for mediolateral outgrowth. To investigate the mechanisms of NS1 function, we used chromatin immunoprecipitation and laser-microdissection RNA-seq of leaf primordial margins to identify gene targets bound and modulated by NS1.

Immunoglobulin D-kappa multiple myeloma in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis: a case report and review of the literature.

A 77-year-old Japanese woman with a 21-year history of seropositive, erosive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a 10-year history of methotrexate (MTX) therapy was admitted with malaise and mild consciousness disturbance. Laboratory data showed hypercalcemia, acute kidney injury, normocytic anaemia, and thrombocytopenia. As we first assumed drug-induced toxicity by MTX and eldecalcitol, both were discontinued and leucovorin rescue therapy and calcitonin were administered.

Impact of Surface Roughness on Recrystallization of an α-AlO(001) Single Crystal to α-AlO(OH) Diaspore Microcrystals.

We demonstrate that the surface of an α-AlO(001) single crystal recrystallizes to α-AlO(OH) under ultrahigh pressure (8 GPa) at 600 °C. The recrystallization depends on the degree of surface roughness. A polished surface topotaxially recrystallizes to (100)-oriented α-AlO(OH) microcrystals, while unpolished surface recrystallizes to polycrystalline α-AlO(OH).

Effects of nerve-sparing procedures on bowel function after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy: A longitudinal study.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate rectal pain and bowel function of the patients following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).

Methods: We divided 296 patients who underwent RARP into two groups depending on the intervention: NS (nerve-sparing) group (bilateral NS, unilateral NS and bilateral partial NS) and non-NS group (unilateral partial NS, bilateral non-NS). Bowel function was assessed using the Extended Prostate Cancer Index Composite for 24 months after RARP.

Pregnancy in GNE myopathy patients: a nationwide repository survey in Japan.

Background: GNE myopathy is an autosomal recessive adult-onset distal myopathy. While a few case reports have described the progression of GNE myopathy during pregnancy, to our knowledge, none have examined disease progression after delivery or obstetric complications.

Objective: This study aimed to reveal maternal complications, newborn complications, and the impact of pregnancy on disease progression in GNE myopathy patients.

While there are many intractable limitations for in-flight space research, some can be overcome by utilizing gene knockout-disease model mice. Here, we report how deletion of Nrf2, a master regulator of stress defense pathways, affects the health of mice transported for a stay in the International Space Station (ISS).

Local Structure of Glassy Lithium Phosphorus Oxynitride Thin Films: A Combined Experimental and Ab Initio Approach.

Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is an amorphous solid-state lithium ion conductor displaying exemplary cyclability against lithium metal anodes. There is no definitive explanation for this stability due to the limited understanding of the structure of LiPON. Herein, we provide a structural model of RF-sputtered LiPON.

Background And Aim: Portosystemic shunt occlusion using endovascular treatment can transiently improve liver function in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. In recent years, viral hepatitis can be easily controlled. The present study aimed to clarify the safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment in decompensated cirrhotic patients, and to elucidate whether viral treatment improves the prognosis after shunt occlusion.

Clinicopathological Factors Related to Recurrence Patterns of Resected Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Even after complete resection, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) shows preferential recurrence in the mediastinal lymph nodes, lungs, brain, bone, liver, and adrenal gland. However, the relationship between clinicopathological factors and recurrence patterns after resection has not been well-evaluated. Among 688 NSCLC cases with complete resection between 2004 and 2016, 233 cases recurred at our institute.

Engagement intervention versus treatment as usual for young adults with serious mental illness: a randomized pilot trial.

Background: Young adults have elevated rates of mental health disorders, yet they often do not receive consistent care. The challenge of continuing to engage young adults has been pervasive worldwide. Few engagement interventions have been designed for young adults with serious mental illness.

A Comparison of Central Anatomic Single-Bundle Reconstruction and Anatomic Double-Bundle Reconstruction in Anteroposterior and Rotational Knee Stability: Intraoperative Biomechanical Evaluation.

Postoperative anterior and rotational stability are still controversial when compared with single-bundle (SB) and double-bundle (DB) anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This study aimed to compare the central anatomical SB and anatomical DB ACL reconstruction in intraoperative knee kinematics during continuous knee flexion-extension. A total of 34 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction using the hamstring tendon were evaluated intraoperatively before and immediately after ACL reconstruction using OrthoPilot ACL Navigation System Version 3.

Improved RISM-CASSCF Optimization via State-Average Treatment and Damping for Characterizing Excited Molecules in Solution with Multireference Perturbation Theory.

Determination of excited states of near-infrared (NIR) bioimaging dyes is a challenging theoretical task because of their energy levels with a small gap and the presence of solvation. In the previous study, we showed that the development of the reference interaction site model coupled with the complete active space second-order perturbation theory, the RISM-CASPT2 method, and its extension with the density matrix renormalization group enabled high accuracy prediction of the photochemical properties of bioimaging-related fluorescent molecules in solution (Shimizu et al., , 5673-5679).

A non-mosaic transchromosomic mouse model of down syndrome carrying the long arm of human chromosome 21.

Animal models of Down syndrome (DS), trisomic for human chromosome 21 (HSA21) genes or orthologs, provide insights into better understanding and treatment options. The only existing transchromosomic (Tc) mouse DS model, Tc1, carries a HSA21 with over 50 protein coding genes (PCGs) disrupted. Tc1 is mosaic, compromising interpretation of results.

Interfacial Superconductivity in FeSe Ultrathin Films on SrTiO_{3} Probed by In Situ Independently Driven Four-Point-Probe Measurements.

We investigated the superconducting transport properties of the one-unit-cell FeSe ultrathin films epitaxially grown on undoped SrTiO_{3}(001) (STO) with a well-defined surface structure by in situ independently-driven four-point-probe measurements. Our results unambiguously revealed the detection of the two-dimensional electrical conduction of the films without parallel conduction through the underlying substrate, both in the normal and superconducting states. The monolayer film exhibited a superconducting transition at an onset temperature of 40 K.

Association of Hypnotic Drug Use with Fall Incidents in Hospitalized Elderly Patients: A Case-Crossover Study.

We investigated whether use of hypnotic drugs, including benzodiazepine receptor agonists, as well as ramelteon and suvorexant are associated with fall incidents in elderly inpatients aged no less than 75 years, who were hospitalized at an acute care general hospital in Japan, between November 1st, 2016 and October 31st, 2017. Multivariate analysis results were reported as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Following to a case-crossover study protocol, the time windows of the case and the control days were assigned to the day or the days, which are one day or 2-8 d before the fall incidents, respectively.

Background: We investigated prognostic factors for biochemical recurrence (BCR) after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) with extended pelvic lymph node (LN) dissection.

Methods: We included 173 patients who underwent RARP with extended pelvic LN dissection without neoadjuvant therapy at our hospital between October 2010 and April 2018. BCR was defined as prostate serum antigen (PSA) levels ≥ 0.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation of porcine liver.

Purpose: Animal studies of endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (EUS-RFA) of the liver have rarely been reported. We assessed the effectiveness and safety of EUS-RFA in pigs.

Methods: We conducted four experiments using newly designed RFA electrodes.

In searching for rational molecular targets, we identified metadherin (MTDH), a multifunctional gene associated with several tumor types but previously unrecognized in OC.

Jumping translocations of 1q in donor cell-derived myelodysplastic syndrome after cord blood transplantation: Case report and review of the literature.

Donor cell-derived leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (DCL) is a rare complication in patients after allogenic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Since 1971, numerous cases of DCL have been reported, but the detailed mechanisms of DCL are still unclear. A patient with jumping translocations (JTs) of 1q in umbilical cord blood donor cell-derived myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which likely occurred due to genetic alterations of and after cord blood transplantation (CBT), was examined in this study.
