Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization (SALDI), and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) imaging are used for visualizing the spatial distribution of analytes. Mass spectrometry (MS) imaging of a sample with a rough surface with a uniform distribution of an analyte does not provide uniform ion intensities in the image. A shift in the value of the analyte ions is also observed.

Although bilateral simultaneous total knee arthroplasty (BSTKA) is an effective treatment for bilateral knee osteoarthritis, safety concerns and lack of precise patient selection criteria persist. This study aimed to determine the differences in perioperative parameters and complication rates between BSTKA and staged TKA in the Japanese population. We retrospectively reviewed 531 patients who underwent BSTKA or staged TKA between 2012 and 2021.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and surface-assisted laser desorption ionization (SALDI) mass spectrometry (MS), which can detect biomolecules and polymers, are widely used in biochemistry and material science. Some compounds that are difficult to ionize using MALDI can be ionized using SALDI. However, it is difficult to obtain high ion yields using SALDI/MS.

Several N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are experimentally observed upon the addition of muonium (Mu), and the hyperfine coupling constants (HFCCs) of muon are measured. Theoretical investigation of Mu has been challenging due to significant quantum effects. Herein, we performed an ab initio path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulation, which accurately considers multi-dimensional quantum effects, to theoretically investigate muoniated 1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazole-2-ylidene (Mu-IY).

Background This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of older adults using cochlear implants (CIs) by focusing on how individual characteristics and speech perception are related to generic QOL ratings and utilizing the Health Utilities Index Mark III (HUI3) for assessment. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted with 19 participants aged ≥60 years, who were within one to five years post-implant activation. Data were obtained through self-administered questionnaires, including the HUI3 for generic QOL assessment and disease-specific indexes.

Hemodialysis therapy is an extracorporeal circulation treatment that serves as a substitute for renal function. In Japan, patients receive this efficient four-hour treatment, three times per week, allowing them to maintain a social life nearly equivalent to that of healthy individuals. Before the treatment, two punctures are performed to establish extracorporeal circulation, and a high blood flow rate is essential to ensure efficient therapy.

Tailormade bottom-up synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) from various functional building blocks offer not only tunable topology and pore size but also multidimensional properties. High crystallinity is one of the prerequisites for their structures and associated physicochemical properties. Among different π-conjugated motifs for constructing COFs, pyrene-based tetragonal structures are effective in achieving highly ordered and crystalline states.

Diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) is a key enzyme for fat absorption step in the enterocytes. We previously reported that DGAT1 inhibition increased plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities in corn oil-loaded rats via protein kinase C (PKC) activation. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism with respect to the morphology and permeability of the small intestine, focusing on PKC function, and found that shortening of the intestinal villi and a decrease in the number of tdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling-positive cells in the tips of the villi were observed in the jejunum of DGAT1 inhibitor-treated rats loaded with corn oil.

The Jikei Academic Nursing Practice Center for the Community developed a community nursing practice that matched community health problems and concerns in Chofu and Komae cities, suburban areas of the Tokyo Metropolis. This study aimed to identify health problems and high-risk populations via an understanding of the practice of health behaviors, health literacy, and quality of life. This was an online, cross-sectional study conducted in September 2023.

Introduction: We aimed to comprehensively compile placebo-controlled trials on the efficacy and safety of romosozumab (210 mg, subcutaneously, once monthly) in postmenopausal women and men with osteoporosis.

Materials And Methods: PubMed, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for relevant placebo-controlled trials (as of January 1, 2024).

We report a histiocytic sarcoma originating from the epididymis observed in a 110-week-old male CD-1 mouse in a carcinogenicity study. At necropsy, no lesions were observed in the epididymis. Histologically, a neoplastic lesion was observed in the cauda of the epididymis that was well demarcated from the surrounding tissues.

This study explores various models of semiconductor dielectric functions, with a specific emphasis on the large wavenumber spectrum and the derivation of the screened exchange interaction. Particularly, we discuss the short-range effect of the screened exchange potential. Our investigation reveals that the short-range effect originating from the high wavenumber spectrum is contingent upon the dielectric constant of the targeted system.

Although bilateral simultaneous total knee arthroplasty (BSTKA) is an effective treatment for bilateral knee osteoarthritis, safety concerns and lack of precise patient selection criteria persist. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the complication rate and the role of frailty in patient selection for BSTKA. We analyzed data from 434 patients who underwent BSTKA between February 2012 and January 2021, examining demographic factors and preoperative blood test results.

Objectives: This study examined the association between cooperative work climate and business owners' attitudes toward work climate and help-seeking intentions for balancing medical treatment and job (BTJ) by occupation among employees of small companies.

Methods: In January 2024, we conducted an online survey of 1,800 full-time employees aged 20-64 years with no work restrictions due to illness working in small companies. After participants were provided a leaflet regarding BTJ, they were asked to indicate their intention to seek help in an imaginary situation where they had been diagnosed with cancer.

Denosumab and bisphosphonates for primary osteoporosis are generally well-tolerated, but their comparative safety remains unclear. We aimed to explore the comparative safety of denosumab and bisphosphonates in primary osteoporosis. Databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for relevant peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials published in English (as of December 2023).

Article Synopsis
  • Catheter-related suppurative thrombophlebitis (CRST) is a serious infection related to catheter use, often linked to catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI).
  • The microbiological profile of CRST aligns closely with that of CRBSI, but Clostridium perfringens, which causes gas gangrene, is an uncommon pathogen in these cases.
  • A case study highlights that the presence of gas-forming thrombus around the catheter can aid in the early diagnosis of this specific type of thrombophlebitis caused by Clostridium perfringens.

The first total synthesis of (-)-merrillianin (), which is a natural sesquiterpene with a tricyclic structure having a cyclopentane ring and five- and seven-membered lactone parts, is demonstrated. This asymmetric total synthesis enabled the absolute stereostructure determination of naturally occurring (-)-.

Background: This study aimed to examine population-based characteristics of non-fatal self-harm in an urban area during pre- and peri-pandemic periods of COVID-19 by sex, age, and severity of self-harm, using pre-hospital medical emergency records.

Methods: We used a registry of all pre-hospital medical records of self-harm cases that occurred in Kawasaki City, Japan, between January 2018 and December 2021. Adjusted incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Poisson regression models with the log-transformed population by year, sex, age group, and ward as an offset term.
