Morphological change of foveolar-type gastric adenocarcinoma after proton pump inhibitor discontinuation in a short time period: A case report.

A 37-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy as a screening examination for anemia and bloody stool. A semi-pedunculated edematous lobular polyp of 25 mm in size was detected in the greater curvature of the upper gastric body. At that time, a definitive diagnosis of cancer could not be made based on a biopsy specimen from the lesion.

[Gastric varices treated by balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration following oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy for gastric cancer].

A 78-year-old female patient with stomach cancer (with hepatic metastasis and peritoneal dissemination) had received eight courses of an S-1 and oxaliplatin regimen as palliative chemotherapy. Computed tomography revealed liver deformities and incidental gastric varices. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy confirmed the findings of gastric varices in the cardia and fornix.

Airway disorders associated with immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy: Two case reports and a systematic review.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are widely used for the treatment of various malignant neoplasms. Interstitial lung disease is a well-known immune-related adverse event, however, ICI-induced airway disease remains under-recognized. Herein, we report two similar cases of pembrolizumab-induced tracheobronchitis presenting as persistent chronic cough and dyspnea.

Non-inferior clinical outcomes of immune checkpoint inhibitors in non-small cell lung cancer patients with interstitial lung disease.

Objectives: The efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with pre-existing interstitial lung disease (ILD) is unclear.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective medical data from advanced or recurrent NSCLC patients who were treated with nivolumab or pembrolizumab at ten institutions in Japan between January 2016 and September 2018 were analyzed. Eligible patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of pre-existing ILD.

The utility of two-dimensional real-time shear wave elastography for assessing liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection.

Objective: Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is a new ultrasound-based elastography method to evaluate liver fibrosis in the daily practice. However, the utility of 2D-SWE among the other liver fibrosis markers is unclear.

Methods: We enrolled 141 consecutive patients with hepatitis C virus infection, 66 men and 75 women (median age, 67 years), who underwent liver biopsy and 2D-SWE (LOGIQ E9, GE Healthcare, Wauwatosa, WI, USA).

We report two family members, a 64-year-old woman (patient 1) and her 37-year-old son (patient 2) diagnosed with summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis (SHP). Both patients had high serum titers of anti-Trichosporon asahii antibody. The patients lived in the same house and worked in the same barbershop.

Plant roots play important roles not only in the absorption of water and nutrients, but also in stress tolerance. Previously, we identified RSOsPR10 as a root-specific pathogenesis-related (PR) protein induced by drought and salt treatments in rice. Transcripts and proteins of RSOsPR10 were strongly induced by jasmonate (JA) and the ethylene (ET) precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), while salicylic acid (SA) almost completely suppressed these inductions.

Combination of intraoperative 5-aminolevulinic acid-induced fluorescence and 3-D MR imaging for guidance of robotic laser ablation for precision neurosurgery.

A combination of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-induced fluorescence and three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of a brain tumor has been incorporated into a robotic laser ablation neurosurgery system. 5-ALA is a non-fluorescent prodrug that leads to intracellular accumulation of fluorescent protoporphyrins IX (PpIX) in malignant glioma. The PpIX tends to accumulate in pathological lesions, and emits red fluorescence when excited by blue light.

Echocardiographic characteristics predicting efficacy of drug therapy in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

Background: The efficacy of long-term drug therapy for patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) remains unclear. This study was performed to characterize the echocardiographic findings of patients responsive to drug therapy.

Methods: Left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) gradient and morphologic characteristics of the septum, posterior wall, and mitral valve were measured echocardiographically in 35 Japanese patients.

Perinuclear-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies are associated with vasculitis.

We describe a 62-year-old man with perinuclear-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies-associated vasculitis, which involved the heart, lung, and kidneys. The patient's care was complicated by total occlusions of the brachiocephalic and right renal arteries and a stenosis of the left renal artery. Involvement of large-sized vessels has not been reported in patients with perinuclear-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies-associated vasculitis.

Plasma brain natriuretic peptide as a parameter to assess efficacy of continuous intravenous infusion of prostacyclin (epoprostenol) to treat severe primary pulmonary hypertension: a case report.

Continuous intravenous infusion of prostacyclin (epoprostenol) as a treatment for primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) definitely improves the patient's quality of life, but few accurate parameters have been found to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment. We observed a patient with severe PPH whose plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) level changed significantly as her condition and symptoms changed. Plasma BNP may be considered as one of the parameters for assessing the efficacy of prostacyclin treatment.

Recurrent pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma presenting as a cardiac tumor.

A 58-year-old patient is presented who had a pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma which recurred 10 years after sleeve left pneumonectomy. The patient developed acute heart failure because the lesion obstructed blood flow by compressing the left atrium. Transesophageal echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a solid mass arising from the pericardium which displaced the posterior wall of the left atrium.

Rheumatoid arthritis and simultaneous aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valve incompetence.

We describe a 72-year-old woman with aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valve incompetence secondary to a rheumatoid granulomata. The cardiac valvular lesions developed simultaneously and deteriorated rapidly. The patient died after a transient relief of symptoms by high dose steroid therapy.

Subdivided left atrium mimicking a cardiac tumor.

We describe a 25-year-old man with a subdivided left atrium. The lesion was misdiagnosed preoperatively as a cardiac tumor because echocardiographic and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid mass arising from the posterior wall of the left atrium. Cardiac surgery revealed a small accessory chamber draining the two left pulmonary veins.

Right coronary artery aneurysm with associated arteriovenous fistula.

We describe a 47-year-old man who had a right coronary artery aneurysm measuring 78 x 69 mm which communicated to the right ventricle. The lesion was asymptomatic. The myocardial blood supply was highly dependent on the left coronary artery.

Alterations of fibrinolytic activity in human during and after hyperbaric oxygen exposure.

To clarify the stage of fibrinolytic activation by hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) exposure, we examined its alterations in human during and after the HBO exposure. Eight healthy female volunteers breathed oxygen at 284 kPa (2.8 atmospheres absolute).

Effect of epidermal growth factor on cadherin-mediated adhesion in a human oesophageal cancer cell line.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) mediates many pleiotrophic biological effects, one of which is alteration of cellular morphology. In the present study, we examine the possibility that this alteration in cell morphology is caused in part by the dysfunction of cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesion using the human oesophageal cancer cell line TE-2R, which expresses E-cadherin and EGF receptor. In the presence of EGF, TE-2R changed its shape from round to fibroblastic and its colony formation from compact to sparse.

P53 expression in esophageal dysplasia - a possible biomarker for carcinogenesis of esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma.

The tumor suppressor gene product p53 has been detected in a high percentage of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. To evaluate the role of this protein in carcinogenesis, we examined the p53 overexpression both in esophageal dysplasia and in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in the same patients. Using anti-p53 antibodies pAb1801 and CM-1, we analyzed immunohistochemically 36 dysplastic lesions from 36 patients with esophageal cancer.

Clearance and distribution of a haemorrhagic factor purified from Bothrops jararaca venom in mice.

We previously purified two fibrinolytic/haemorrhagic enzymes (jararafibrase-I and II) from Bothrops jararaca venom. In the present study, the clearance, organ distribution and local absorption rate were examined in mice using 125I-labelled jararafibrase-I. Following intravenous injection of 125I-labelled jararafibrase-I, a complex was rapidly formed with the plasma protein and the radioactivity quickly disappeared from the circulation with a half-life of about 3 min for the initial part of the curve.

Relationship between e-cadherin expression and lymph-node metastasis in human esophageal cancer.

Expression of E-cadherin in esophageal carcinoma was studied immunohistochemically in 65 patients using an anti-human E-cadherin monoclonal antibody (HECD-1). In normal esophageal epithelium, E-cadherin was strongly expressed on cell-cell boundaries. On the contrary, a reduced E-cadherin expression (Rd-type) was frequently observed in cancer tissues (56/65, 88%).

Immunohistochemical evaluation of alpha-catenin expression in human gastric cancer.

E-cadherin (E-cad) plays a major role in the maintenance of cell-cell adhesion in epithelial tissues, and impaired E-cad expression correlates with tumour invasion and metastasis. Alpha-catenin (alpha-cat), an undercoat protein of adherens junctions, binds to the cytoplasmic domain of E-cad and is essential for linking E-cad to actin-based cytoskeleton. We investigated E-cad and alpha-cat expression in 60 human gastric cancers immunohistochemically.

Significance of p53 expression as a prognostic factor in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

The tumour suppressor gene product p53 is believed to play an important role in the progression of human malignant tumours through mutation and over-expression. Using a microwave oven heating method, we have detected over-expression of p53 in buffered-formalin fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of oesophageal carcinomas immunohistochemically and examined the relationship between the p53 over-expression and postoperative survival. Employing a monoclonal antibody (pAb1801), nuclear p53 was detected in 56 of 105 (53%) tumour specimens.

Broad substrate specificity of snake venom fibrinolytic enzymes: possible role in haemorrhage.

We found previously that two fibrinolytic enzymes (jararafibrases I and II) purified from Bothrops jararaca venom displayed a haemorrhagic activity. To elucidate the mechanisms involved and the role of the enzymatic activity in haemorrhage, the enzymatic properties of the purified enzymes were examined. The substrate specificity of the enzymes was determined using type I collagen, type IV collagen, gelatin, laminin and fibronectin as substrates.
