Purpose: We conducted an epidemiological study of survival and disability in stroke in three Japanese communities to seek community strategies for improvement in survival and disability.

Methods: A total of 297 first-ever strokes were identified between 1988 and 1992 in three rural communities (total population = 47,000) located in Akita and Ibaraki. We analyzed survival rates and activity of daily living by sex, age-group and stroke subtypes.

To investigate the contribution of the platelet aggregation in the development of cardiovascular diseases, we examined the relation of constitutional and lifestyle variables with platelet aggregation for a total of 306 males aged 50 to 70 in Ikawa town, Akita prefecture (n = 163) and Noichi town, Kochi prefecture (n = 143). The examination of platelet aggregation was completed within 3 hours of obtaining blood samples. We used ADP (Adenosine 5'-diphosphate) as an agonist and obtained PATI (the platelet aggregatory threshold index) by nephelometry.

To examine population mean variations in plasma fibrinogen and fibrinolytic variables, and their rela tions with cardiovascular risk characteristics among Japanese middle-aged men, a cross-sectional study was conducted for a total of 245 men aged 50-59 years in three population-based samples: residents in rural communities of northeast and central Japan and urban white-collar workers. Age-adjusted mean value of plasma fibrinogen, tissue plasminogen activator antigen (t-PA antigen), plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 antigen (PAI-1 antigen) did not differ significantly among the populations. Mean value of tissue plasminogen activator activity (t-PA activity) was lower in central rural residents than in northeast rural men.

Clinical effect of immunochemotherapy for a patient with advanced gallbladder cancer: report of a case.

A 56-year-old woman was admitted presenting with a sensation of abdominal fullness. She was diagnosed to have advanced gallbladder cancer with carcinomatous peritonitis, as well as lymph node and liver metastases. Effects of a long-term hypertension control program on stroke incidence and prevalence in a rural community in northeastern Japan.

Background And Purpose: Although randomized clinical trials have demonstrated the benefit of antihypertensive treatment in preventing stroke, the effectiveness of community-based programs is largely unknown. We investigated long-term community-based prevention activities.

Methods: In rural northeastern Japan, people aged > or = 30 years numbered 3219 in the full intervention community and 1468 in the minimal intervention community in 1965.

The melibiose utilization system of Escherichia coli W3133, a derivative of K12, is nonfunctional between 37 and 42 degreesC. The reason for this temperature sensitivity was thought to be that the melibiose transporter (MelB) of W3133 cells was temperature-sensitive. A mutant W3133-2 has been isolated as a temperature-resistant strain that can utilize melibiose between 37 and 42 degreesC.

Mutants of Citrobacter freundii that transport and utilize melibiose.

We have isolated mutants of Citrobacter freundii that can grow on melibiose. Inducible alpha-galactosidase activity and melibiose transport activity were detected in the mutant cells but not in the wild-type cells. We detected a DNA region which hybridized with melB (the gene for the melibiose transporter) DNA of Escherichia coli in the chromosomal DNA of wild-type C.

Objectives: Our purpose was to elucidate the involvement of the tyrosine kinase pathway in gonadotropin-induced ovulation in the rat ovary.

Study Design: We investigated the effect of a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, tyrphostin, on the rat ovulatory process in vivo and in vitro.

Methods: In cultured rat granulosa cells, the effect of tyrphostin on LH-, dibutyryl cyclic AMP ((Bu)2cAMP)- or forskolin-stimulated tissue type plasminogen activator (tPA) activities was examined by using a fibrin autography technique.

A single RNA transcript from the msr-msd region serves not only as a template but also as a primer for msDNA synthesis.

Transient left bundle branch block induced by left-sided cardiac catheterization in patients without pre-existing conduction abnormalities.

A traumatic left bundle branch block (LBBB) is uncommon in a patient with intact atrioventricular conduction. Three of our patients developed LBBB during a left-sided catheterization. Two patients suffered from angina pectoris and the other had an abdominal aneurysm.

[Effectiveness of a health education class to increase fish intake evaluated by serum fatty acid compositions].

For prevention of cardiovascular disease, we recommended increased fish intake for 50 middle-aged women and men of 40-83 years old at a three-month community-based health education program in an inland farming community. The effectiveness of the education program was evaluated by examining changes in serum lipids and serum fatty acid compositions. For comparison, we selected 48 men and women of 38-82 years old did not participated in the program.

Alcohol intake and premature coronary heart disease in urban Japanese men.

To examine the relation between alcohol intake and the incidence of coronary heart disease among Japanese, the authors analyzed data from a prospective study of 8,476 Japanese male employees, who were 40-59 years old at baseline (between 1975 and 1984) and worked for 13 urban companies in Osaka, Japan. These men were followed until the end of 1993, on average, an 8.8-year follow-up.

Sequence of a melibiose transporter gene of Enterobacter cloacae.

We cloned a fragment of the chromosomal DNA of Enterobacter cloacae, which enabled a melibiose-negative Escherichia coli mutant lacking melB to grow on melibiose as the sole source of carbon. Transformed cells harboring the hybrid plasmid carrying the cloned DNA showed melibiose transport activity. The nucleotide sequence of the DNA region was determined.

A 97-kD component of nuclear pore-targeting complex (the beta-subunit of nuclear pore-targeting complex [PTAC]/importin/karyopherin) mediates the import of nuclear localization signal (NLS)-containing proteins by anchoring the NLS receptor protein (the alpha-subunit of PTAC/importin/karyopherin) to the nuclear pore complex (NPC). The import requires a small GTPase Ran, which interacts directly with the beta-subunit. The present study describes an examination of the behavior of the beta-subunit in living cells and in digitonin-permeabilized cells.

Mutational analysis of amiloride sensitivity of the NhaA Na+/H+ antiporter from Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

The activity of the NhaA Na+/H+ antiporter of Vibrio parahaemolyticus is inhibited by amiloride. We found an amino acid sequence in the NhaA that was identical to a putative amiloride binding domain of the Na+/H+ exchanger in mammalian cells. We constructed mutant NhaAs that had amino acid substitutions in the putative amiloride binding domain by site-directed mutagenesis.

[A successful surgical repair of congenital mitral stenosis due to commissural papillary muscle fusion].

A case of congenital mitral stenosis, patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary hypertension was reported. At one year of age, the patient underwent surgical division of PDA because of persistent left heart failure. She went well after the operation.

The surgical correction was performed successfully in a 14-year-old boy with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (type Ia) associated with Williams syndrome. The diagnosis was made at the age of 3 and he had been well until the age of 13 when sudden chordal rupture caused severe mitral regurgitation and supraventricular tachyarrhythmia. The operational procedure includes common pulmonary vein and left atrium anastomosis through Gersony-Malm approach, chordal reconstruction of mitral valve with 4-0 Core Tex sutures.
