Relationship of computed tomography-based measurements with symptom perception and quality of life in patients with severe asthma.

Background: Symptom perception and quality of life (QOL) are important domains for properly managing severe asthma. This study aimed to assess the relationship between airway structural and parenchymal variables measured using chest computed tomography (CT) and subjective symptom perception and QOL in patients with severe asthma enrolled in the Korean Severe Asthma Registry.

Methods: This study used CT-based objective measurements, including airway wall thickness (WT), hydraulic diameter, functional small airway disease (fSAD), and emphysematous lung (Emph), to assess their association with subjective symptom (cough, dyspnea, wheezing, and sputum) perception measured using the visual analog scale, and QOL measured by the Severe Asthma Questionnaire (SAQ).

Mortality in patients with chronic hepatitis B treated with tenofovir or entecavir: A multinational study.

Background And Aim: The benefits of entecavir (ETV) versus tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) in reducing the development of chronic hepatitis B (CHB)-related hepatocellular carcinoma remain controversial. Whether mortality rates differ between patients with CHB treated with ETV and those treated with TDF is unclear.

Methods: A total of 2542 patients with CHB treated with either ETV or TDF were recruited from a multinational cohort.

The aim of this study is to enhance comprehension of the different types and features of dementia, including their symptoms, diagnosis and medical treatment, and to propose various evidence-based exercise interventions and their clinical applications tailored to each specific type of dementia. The theoretical review includes the analysis of publications in the scientific databases PubMed/Medline, Ebsco, Scielo, and Google. A total of 177 articles were found, of which 84 were studied in depth.

Effect of high-dose vitamin C on renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Acute kidney injury frequently occurs after cardiac surgery, and is primarily attributed to renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury and inflammation from surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass. Vitamin C, an antioxidant that is often depleted in critically ill patients, could potentially mitigate I/R-induced oxidative stress at high doses. We investigated the effectiveness of high-dose vitamin C in preventing I/R-induced renal injury.

Purpose: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is considered a microvascular disorder and serves as an indicator for the potential development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Droplet microfluidics for time-resolved serial crystallography.

Serial crystallography requires large numbers of microcrystals and robust strategies to rapidly apply substrates to initiate reactions in time-resolved studies. Here, we report the use of droplet miniaturization for the controlled production of uniform crystals, providing an avenue for controlled substrate addition and synchronous reaction initiation. The approach was evaluated using two enzymatic systems, yielding 3 µm crystals of lysozyme and 2 µm crystals of Pdx1, an Arabidopsis enzyme involved in vitamin B6 biosynthesis.

DHCR7 and SC5D are enzymes crucial for cholesterol biosynthesis, and mutations in their genes are associated with developmental disorders, which are characterized by craniofacial deformities. We have recently reported that a loss of either Dhcr7 or Sc5d results in a failure in osteoblast differentiation. Cyclic High Negative-Pressure External Volume Expansion Reduces Daily Device Application Time With Similar Effects on Recipient Site Preparation in a Murine Model.

Recipient site preparation using external volume expansion (EVE) increases graft survival in large-volume fat grafting. To improve patient compliance with using the device, we tested a new cyclic high negative-pressure (CHNP) mode that involves 1 h/day at -55 mm Hg, cycled between 1-second negative-pressure activation, followed by a 2-second deactivation period in an animal model. A miniaturized EVE device was applied to 30 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Males of are distinguished from Gaud & Atyeo, 1981, in having a single triangular prodorsal shield, sinuous margins of the opisthosoma located between setae 2 and 2 on the hysteronotal shield, an oval-shaped epiandrum without posterior extensions, a shorter tibia + tarsus IV than femoragenu IV, and an absent ambulacral disc of leg IV. Females differ in having a prodorsal shield with a posterior margin that is blunt-angular, and a concave posterior margin of the hysteronotal shield with posterior extensions.

Terahertz (THz) electromagnetic waves, known for their unique response to water, offer promising opportunities for next-generation biomedical diagnostics and novel cancer therapy technologies. This study investigated the impedance-matching effect, which enhances the efficiency of THz wave delivery into tissues and compensates for the signal distortion induced by the refractive index mismatch between the target and the sample substrate. Three candidate biocompatible materials, water, glycerol, and petroleum jelly were applied to a skin phantom and compared using THz two-dimensional imaging and time-of-flight imaging methods.

Optimal antithrombotic strategy in patients with atrial fibrillation beyond 1 year after drug-eluting stent implantation: Design and rationale of the randomized ADAPT AF-DES trial.
