Background: Perineural administration of dexmedetomidine (PN-DEX) can enhance the efficacy of local anesthetics used in regional nerve blocks while decreasing the median effective concentration (EC50) of these anesthetics. Intranasal administration of dexmedetomidine (IN-DEX) is more accessible for sedation during regional anesthesia because of its non-invasive systemic administration and demonstrates synergism with local anesthetic. However, it remains unclear whether IN-DEX affects the EC50 of local anesthetics used in caudal blocks.

Background: Acupuncture may have some potential in pain relief after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and this meta-analysis aims to explore the impact of acupuncture on pain intensity, nausea and vomiting for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Methods: PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO, Cochrane library databases, CNKI, VIP, and Wangfang were systematically searched, and we included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effect of acupuncture on pain control for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Results: Five RCTs and 366 patients were included in the meta-analysis.

Executive functions, the set of cognitive control processes that facilitate adaptive thoughts and actions, are composed primarily of three distinct yet interrelated cognitive components: Inhibition, Shifting, and Updating. While prior research has examined the nature of different components as well as their inter-relationships, fewer studies examined whole-brain connectivity to predict individual differences for the three cognitive components and associated tasks. Here, using the Connectome-based Predictive Modelling (CPM) approach and open-access data from the Human Connectome Project, we built brain network models to successfully predict individual performance differences on the Flanker task, the Dimensional Change Card Sort task, and the 2-back task, each putatively corresponding to Inhibition, Shifting, and Updating.

Background: Exposure to major life stressors and aberrant functional connectivity have been linked to anxiety and depression, especially during adolescence. However, whether specific characteristics of life stressors and functional network connectivity act together to differentially predict anxiety and depression symptoms remains unclear.

Methods: We utilized baseline lifetime stressor exposure and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data in a longitudinal sample of 107 adolescents enriched for anxiety and depressive disorders.

The development of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction and heavy metal ion (HMI) detection is significant and challenging. Here, a novel nitrogen, sulfur co-doped porous carbon sphere bifunctional catalyst was designed and fabricated by hydrothermal followed by carbonization using starch as carbon source and thiourea as nitrogen, sulfur source for HMI detection and oxygen evolution reactions. Under the synergistic effect of pore structure, active sites and nitrogen, sulfur functional groups, C-S-HT-C demonstrated excellent HMI detection performance and oxygen evolution reaction activity.

The physical and chemical properties of spinnable pitch showed a huge impact on the performance of resultant pitch carbon fiber even if its physical and chemical properties were slightly changed. Various polycyclic aromatic compounds and abundant free radicals existed in spinnable pitch, and there are many interactions among molecules and free radicals. The molecular structure and composition of spinnable pitch were investigated during incubation, and the effect of molecular evaluation on rheological properties of spinnable pitch was illustrated using various characterization methods in this work.

The fast recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and poor stability have impeded the application of many narrow band gap semiconductors with otherwise excellent photocatalytic performance. A metal-semiconductor Schottky junction is a promising strategy to accelerate charge separation and enhance catalytic efficiency. However, the preparation of these structures often involves intricate processes and harsh conditions, which will inevitably destroy the electronic structures of the semiconductors and ruin their original properties in practical applications.
